Re: Last two letters start the next word v2.

Several - more than two, but not many. Could be called approximate precision, or maybe precise approximation. Useful when you don't really have a clue how many ... :D

Neutrino - a subatomic particle with a mass close to zero and no electric charge. Or is it one of those weirdly named coffees touted by "Baristas", like "Crapachino" - I get confused. ;)))

Anticyclone - area of high barometric pressure, usually resulting in calm, fine weather. Oh yes please, let's have some of that, we're fed up with these yukky cyclones of low pressure and storms, one after another ... :-s

Re: Last two letters start the next word v2.

Negative - there is a thing called "i" in maths, which is defined as the square root of minus one. Many folk consider that to be an impossible concept, but stubborn mathematicians insist it's a valid means of solving problems in "complex numbers". All that's needed is a willingness to just accept t...

Re: Last two letters start the next word v2.

Legerdemain - skill at using the hands when performing magic tricks. Since it's made up from three 'frog' words, which taken together mean 'light of hand' in English, another interpretation of its meaning could be 'light - fingered', which isn't as flattering, and suggests a bit of dishonest thieve...

Oscar - I had an uncle Oscar many years ago, and now one of my three grandsons also has that name. Neither of them with any association with prestigious film awards, though both with winning ways about them. (Groan, if you like ... :) )

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread IV

Every time I make 'er a cup of tea I wonder why people put milk in tea and coffee. It is not natural. Scotch yes but not milk. Who ever though about it, and why? What relationship is there between a cow and tea leaves and coffee beans? They eat grass not tea leaves or coffee beans. I hate the stuff...

Re: Bow Ties

Later on, (1989/1990) during lengthy investigations of my medical symptoms, most of the senior hospital doctors (consultants) wore bow ties, especially the 'professors' in the teaching hospitals. With a couple of doctors in my family, I've been told that many of them believe that a normal long tie ...

Re: Bow Ties

Coo, Ian, you move in higher social circles than me! White tie and tails were the "bee's knees" for Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in their classic films, but I've never ventured into that mode of dress!

Re: Bow Ties

I quite like wearing a bow tie, if it's black and for a special occasion requiring a DJ or even the flashy white tuxedo jacket, such as a ball in a decent hotel or on a cruise which has gala nights. This has something to do with the very first time I wore the penguin suit, which was a glorious freeb...

Re: Last two letters start the next word v2.

Utopian - an imagined idealistic perfection of everything, in the best of all possible worlds. Most of the time it's probably unattainable, but then look at the late Carlo Ponti, who had the fabulous privilege of being married to Sophia Loren for several blissful years ... :D

Omega - last letter of the Greek alphabet. The upper and lower case symbols are much loved by mathematicians, scientists and engineers, who all enjoy solving their equations to obtain the values of unknown quantities which look like a set of headphones (upper) or a bare bottom (lower). :D

Anagram - word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of another. Cryptic crossword compilers do it a lot, just to annoy the puzzlers. (Dabrasts!) :D

Re: Last two letters start the next word v2.

Organ - an instrument on which Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor can sound awe-inspiring. A good friend has one in his 'barn', obtained from a local church which had replaced it with modern electronics. He can play that piece so well that the hairs on the back of my neck are raised; all I have ev...

Shale - a soft rock formed from compressed mud or clay, often in near-horizontal layers. That collapsed cliff in Torquay shown in the Coastal Erosion thread looks very much like shale; if I lived in the "luxury" flats nearby, I'd keep a suitcase packed as a contingency measure ... :-s

Re: Last two letters start the next word v2.

Dome - a rounded kind of roof. The "Millennium Dome" built by muddling politicians at vast public expense to "celebrate" the new year in 2000 wasn't actually a dome at all, just a big circus tent for the same crowd of clowns to play in. Now it's just another venue for noisy pop concerts, which seem...

Re: Last two letters start the next word v2.

Illegal - to watch TV without a valid licence in the UK. Unless Gary Lineker's suggested "voluntary" payment for it were to be implemented. Yes, that would work in our highly moral country, wouldn't it? ;)))
