Legal Insurance
We are being offered legal insurance cover as an extra every time we take out a car or house policy (and for all I know boat, aircraft, or anything else). I have always refused these but in our ever-increasingly litigous society I am wondering if these might be a worthwhile precaution. So - has anyb...

Re: United Max Gear Collapse at IAH
Just wondering - is the speed of the a/c on the ground taken from the pitot? In the video above the speed was mentioned as 58 knots and then 30 knots as if the readings came too close together for the difference to be caused by braking, leading me to wonder if it was caused by wind gusting.

Re: United 777 Loses Wheel on T/O from SFO
Is it normal practice to brake the wheels on an airliner before retracting? If so wouldn't there be a lot of stress when the wheel stops suddenly?

Logically you are correct, but since when has logic played any part in justice?

Re: Thought for the day - AI
I call it Artificial Idiocy Apart from the general demonstrations of total stupidity by the children who write software nowadays - for example assuming that somehow magically the approx 1 million people in the UK who have no mobile phone signal can still somehow receive a SMS code to enable them to ...

Looking for a cheap simple 4G candy bar
With the imminent demise of 2G/3G I have been looking for a replacement mobile phone. I have no signal where I live so I only use it when out and about and it doesn't really matter if it has 2G/3G or not, coverage from all networks is patchy around here. I don't have any need for data so a basic pho...

Re: When did the flying bug first really bite?
Father was in RAF in the war (ground crew) and I relished his tales of life in the RAF. I read loads of flying stories and I dreamed of flying in the forces or commercially. Unfortunately, at age 10, polio put an end to those dreams, and it wasn't until I was about 25 that I first took to the air, v...

Re: Tricks of the 727
I used to love them as a pax - while all the muppets were queuing up to get out of the front door, I would quietly slip out of the rear one and beat most of them to immigration.

Re: Do film makers have shares in electricity companies?
I see that, but I was recently watching a film where a scene was set in a flashy apartment overlooking the Thames. The south wall of the very large lounge was completely glass. There was surely enough light there for anybody, certainly for my cheapo camcorder, but again all the lights in the place w...

Re: Do film makers have shares in electricity companies?
That's quite correct, but in daylight the lights shouldn't need to be switched on, unless the room is seriously under-windowed.

Do film makers have shares in electricity companies?
I have been watching a number of box sets of police detective programmes recently and have noticed that, in almost all cases, when the scene is set indoors, EVERY possible light is turned on in daytime, even if there was nobody in the room. Ceiling lights, wall lights, table lamps, all on with broad...
Re: Money
Sounds about right - all the "experts" that I have read reckon about 6 months salary, that would be half my pension. Since I retired I have been putting into a separate account (called "Medical Accrual", but it can be used for any emergency) the same monthly amount as my last medical insurance (whic...

I have taken a (real, not MSFS) 737 sim under the Golden Gate Bridge for a bit of fun, wife, in jumpseat, who paid for it, most impressed.

Re: Christmas dinner
All alone here with a 14 lb turkey to cook. Lady friends who would have come are both stuck in with illness and unlikely to make it, but the turkey is ordered and needs cooking. Sue and I used to host big family meals for many years but then decided it was more comforting to be just the two of us wi...

Dining table, but it's in an area off the lounge so could see the box if required anyway - though view out the patio doors next to the table is better than the box any day.
