Re: Peregrine falcons at Worcester Cathedral

The feed seems to be frozen. I can hear the wind over the mic but the bird isn't moving. It was the same last night about 2200 when I had a last check before going off to bed.

Re: Peregrine falcons at Worcester Cathedral

I notice that the poor little bugger at the back of the group of 3 isn't being fed and then the fourth one appears from underneath the other three. Talk about a)the loudest complainers get fed and b)survival of the strongest. It's tough being a peregrine chick.

Yes, Beaufort is one of those whose departure I feel the poorer for. Who knows what motivates folks to leave.
I do miss his accounts of the doings of his Newfies. Did he get any replacements I wonder? Sigh.

Re: Peregrine falcons at Worcester Cathedral

Can anyone one think of an "aerodynamic" reason for the tufts of feathers above and below the beak? Air speed indicators during their high speed dives??

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V

Ah yes! Of course. I associate mainly (from my experience) with the RN. And the "....pour congee" is for taking leave. It usually meant a "cockkers P" before the ship left. I have hazy memories of most of them, most memorably on HMS Rothesay in Sembawang dockyard in Singapore, shortly after Sub Lieu...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless ...

...and this Q is. On an invitation card what do the initials RPC stand for? I seem to remember it was "....pour congee" or such like and it was usually for a "leaving do" but what was the "R"? Repondez??
Google did not help.

Was the rebuild done with plywood? I seem to remember from the excellent book "The New Science of Strong Materials(or why we don't fall through the floor" that the Mossie had big problems in the fareast in the latter stages of the war because the humidity caused the wooden components to delaminate. ...

a) how the hell does the bridge see where they're going?
b) what are the "hydrodynamics" of the "hull" components? The phrase " the aerodynamics of a brick" come to mind.
c) why would you name a ship after an eight-legged horse?
Only because I'm curious you understand.

Re: Saw Safety

I belong to a Mens' Shed and when I was a trustee one of the responsibilities that fell to me was machine tool safety. Many of the elderly chaps took a lot of persuading to take it seriously. "I've aye done it this way". Yeah but no but yeah but. If it goes wrong it's MY neck for the chop, so stop. ...
