Re: Covid - 19: How is it affecting you?

Karearea / FD2 Go along with all of that, no cases in the Bay of Islands ( that I know of ) but keeping up the precautions. Managed to squeeze in $40 of petrol on Sunday, first since start of Level 1, only because I was going to lose some AA points ! Desperate to re-book a cancelled trip to the USA,...

Re: Chaos in USA

I've mentioned before, working in Singapore and living in an apartment named Hawaii Towers, my wife received mail from the then largest Telecom provider in the USA initially addressed to : Singapore, Hawaii. Singapore, Malaysia ( nearly right ) Singapore, Hong Kong, and ... wait for it ... Singapore...

.......and outside the obnoxious attitude of several staff at LAX Agree ! (With knobs on ) That was when I realised just how bad the Murricane education system is, at the best of levels. Clearly Americans are no longer being taught how to read - judging by the number of times I have narrowly missed...

Capetonian # 1298. +1 Plus the Tesla that caused an accident on a US Freeway recently, 'cos "something" automatic failed. Perhaps the driver was texting at the same time, feeling secure in being "driven" by technology ? ( read about it a couple of days ago, can't remember where, can't be bothered no...

Re: Rant of the Day v2.

Just heard that it's three weeks before the sun reverses its traverse. Can't wait, in view of the Corona thing maybe it would like to return to Corona free New Zealand a little earlier. ( currently no new cases for 11 days, only one case still to recover, none in hospital, total 21 deaths. Trouble ...

Last time I saw Durdle Door, about 50 years ago, the beach was totally deserted. The scenes depicted in the above link only reinforce my decision not to return to UK.

And I realize Winston Churchill was half-American.
Who also said that Democracy was the worst form of government .... but better than all the alternatives.

Namaste - what we are advised to do now as a greeting when we meet a friend, rather than shake hands, due to the aforesaid China ?

Had a Jewish boy in our Boy Scout Troop. He enjoyed going to Summer Camp with us - so he could enjoy bacon and eggs away from the eyes of his parents.

Re: Pakistan Airbus Down

Yeah ! Will we ever get to know, or just be fed "excerpts" to prove a point. Approach freq ? IF the last bit of the first landing were on Tower freq. might they not have remained with the tower to effectively just do a circuit, then of course there wouldn't have been any command to change to another...

Re: Pakistan Airbus Down

Boac...ATC. Accepted, wasn't in anyway suggesting that they should, but having experience of ATC being "helpful", just a thought. I guess having declared a Mayday on the frequency "in use", they may well have still been on approach for the last few minutes before the final crash, but not the "normal...

Re: Pakistan Airbus Down

Just wrote a long piece on the TOP thread on this subject that was been instantly withdrawn - why did I bother, should have know better but got sucked in. IF they made the first approach with the gear retracted, wouldn't the Tower operator have called " No Gear " ? Not ATC responsibility maybe, but ...

Re: Pakistan Airbus Down

Maybe it was COG that was disrupted. I recall a tale of a BOAC York Freighter having a loose elephant, the trim control was well exercised ! I think there was also one that used its trunk to strip the insulation from various cables and control runs running along the top of the freight compartment !

Re: The US Hamster Wheel

24 hr time is so much easier to use and understand. Won't argue with that, still have a "Glycine Airman" watch, the hands of which only go around once in 24 hrs. instead of twice and the dial rim is labelled 1- 24. It has an external 24 hr. bezel that one can turn to local time. Very useful when tr...
