Re: Baltimore bridge collapse
Saw a close up picture of the starboard bow, which unfortunately I can't re produce here, and it is the starboard bow that hit the bridge structure and it is in a mess. The starboard anchor looks to be still in the hawse pipe.

Re: Baltimore bridge collapse
I think the ship was turning before the anchor was dropped, you can sea the splash of the anchor just before the ship struck. I fancy the the rudder was over to starboard when she lost power and couldn't be moved after that.To get the emergency steering gear moving would take some time because peopl...

Re: Baltimore bridge collapse
After the first power failure the engineers seem to have recovered full power, I doubt if emergency generators would have given full lighting, but at the second loss the ship was starting to turn to starboard and steering must have been lost because it couldn't be stopped. The anchor(s) were dropped...

Re: Baltimore bridge collapse
The ship that hit it probably had a deadweight of about 150000 tons and when the bridge was built people weren't prepared for ships that big. The support tower was the weakest point for the stability of the bridge and as seen it just fell over. If the bridge is replaced I am sure it will be of a dif...

Re: United to Go Under the FAA's Microscope
I always liked flying Continental across the pond, I wonder if United would have been any better if Continental had been the lead airline after the merger?

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
Isn't Xasteria the Greek word for the perfect starry, balmy, summer night? I seem to recall that I was reading about a rather fancy up market sailing yacht called Xasteria and that is what it's name meant.. In my seagoing days the Gulf of Oman during the NE monsoon was the perfect place for stars.. L...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
It is bright and clear on the Humber,if it stays so I will look for the aurora tonight. The wind has gone into the Norrard and it has turned colder and only feels 3 to 5 in the wind chill although the guesser thinks 9 to 11! Had a lousy bacon sandwich and a semi decent coffee in the T.esco cafe this...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
Yorkshire tea in this establishment, me being married to a Yorkie n'all. I drink more of it than she does, after my stroke was told to change to the decaff version it tastes ok. A funny sort of day on the Humber, you would think it was a nice blue cool sunny day and then every hour or so a squall co...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
Another nice sunny day on the Humber, the rain has gone and it is 12C so far with 14C possible. We don't have a tree in the garden but have a leaf count for a forest!! Mrs 1DC always moans about her petrol hybrid cars road tax being £158 while my diesel is only £30. Whilst having coffee and a bacon s...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
Two nice warm, dry and sunny days was clearly our ration for the Humber, it continues mild but the rain came back with a vengeance. Apart from my standard visit next door to check up on himself I had no reason to leave the palace so after a minor domestic to get me going I tidied up the study and th...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
Blimey, £17.95 for Fish and chips in Orkney and the place awash with fish. £7.95 for pensioners Haddock, peas and chips, bread and butter, tea and ice cream to finish in a decent fish and chip shop down here! About £12.00 if you don't want to admit to being a pensioner. The piece of fish goes up to t...

Re: Wind Power---what a time to be alive
I remember this being the answer to the maidens prayer about fifty years ago.looked similar too but was a bit smaller. Think they called it the Walker wingsail and was fitted to a Stephenson Clarke cargo ship I saw it loading coal in Immingham ,I think!
