Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread

Sir Humpty Dumpty it is, and it is located in Market Jew St, Penzance. The figure has a miners lamp in his right hand. Davy was apprenticed to an apothecary at a shop about 20m from the statue which remained a chemist (pharmacy) for a couple of centuries but is now a charity shop. How times have cha...

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread

We have not had a statue for a while so here's one.
Who is he and where is the statue?

Re: WTF is happening in the UK?

Seems to sum things up pretty well. Only thing I would argue with is that state education has improved in the last 14 years. I think that, also, has gone 'down the pan'.

Re: NHS privatisation

Why does everyone equate some form of privatisation of the NHS with the American model of health care? The NHS certainly needs 'root and branch' reform as its current state is parlous but there are European models which appear to work well which we could copy without importing something that only wo...

Re: When did the flying bug first really bite?

Don't know when it started, but probably soon after birth! Becoming a pilot was always my goal, which I achieved at 17 when I was awarded a Special Flying Award by the RAF. It all went pear shaped when a year later I was found to have a heart murmur, much later properly diagnosed as a bicuspid aorti...

I'm amazed that anyone could fall asleep in a Shack, with all that noise, or was it the drone of the Griffons and their contra-rotating props that sent everyone to sleep? :) [/quote] I have managed to 'nod off' when a passenger in a Bell 212 helicopter flying from an offshore platform back to Qatar,...

Re: Rant of the Day v2.

Living, as I do, down a dead-end rural lane in remote Norfolk, deliveries and collections by courier companies can be very uncertain. Probably not helped by the fact that our 'main' road, a single track metalled lane is called Back Lane and the rear entrance down an unmetalled track is Front Street!...

Re: COVID Enguiry

+1 more in agreement. The Covid enquiry here in the UK has already demonstrated that it is just a vehicle for finger pointing, sloping shoulders and generally blaming anyone and everyone else. It will cost tens of millions of pounds and achieve precisely nothing except making a lot of lawyers even r...

Sadly these days few banks send paper statements, even as a option.
Mine does, every month! I refuse to do internet banking and make sure I use my local branch regularly to try and ensure that it stays open.

Re: Birthdays

Many thanks for the birthday wishes. Apologies for the late response. Did sort of celebrate with a lunch with a bunch of Mrs S' cousins as we are in our 'holiday home' in Cornwall. Generally treat birthdays low key. They are just a number nearer the final one so nothing to look forward to!

Re: God-forsaken Places I Have Diverted Into thread

Slight thread drift as I was not diverted into this location, had to pass through it ever time I entered or left the country. Pekanbaru, Indonesia. It was, probably still is a single runway airport on the edge of the jungle, though the jungle is now further away. When I travelled through it the term...
