Re: Has the advent of the UAV rendered the tank obsolete?

A quick search shows a number of companies marketing anti drone and swarm technologies. Rumour has it that an Israeli solution may be fitted to the M1 Abrams. I don't think the tank is obsolete...yet. The OPs question was likely because of the dismal performance of Russian armour during the ongoing ...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V

Like others, I was in the school choir. I enjoyed it! Being a Catholic boarding school we often sang plainsong which I found fun and quite challenging. The highlight, though, was when we were putting on a Christmas carols performance at Bath Abbey and one of the carols was to be Silent Night in Germ...

Re: Formula One

I have lived and worked in Italy for about 10 years. They have a totally different attitude to alcohol. They use it but rarely abuse it. Some of that time was spent with the IAF. A standard midweek lunch would be: retire to the bar next to the dining hall. Drink apperitivo. Eat a light three course ...

Re: Formula One

Ah Ferrari! Stuff of dreams. Never owned one but did once own a lovely little Alfa Spyder with the 3 litre engine. Mad car. In a previous life, I was invited to drive a Testarossa at Monza by one of the F1 team sponsors. Two laps with the factory driver and then two laps solo with strict instruction...

Re: Millions of us might be **** if we ignore the Russian-Ukraine war

Amidst the conflicting claims of combatants, I am seeing a few reports of Russian units having problems with fuel resupply. It reminds me of the saying, ' Good generals study tactics. Great generals study logistics'. Was sitting in the hole at JHQ once ( monitoring a Russian exercise) when we heard ...

Re: Millions of us might be **** if we ignore the Russian-Ukraine war

Obviously, I cannot reveal my source but it is from someone who would know. DEFCON, as you know is a US thing adopted by NATO. It is not global. I didn't ask the question, 'What is the actual level?' My feeling is that it is, in general terms, either 4 or 3. Remember, it is primarily about readiness...

Re: Millions of us might be **** if we ignore the Russian-Ukraine war

I'll repeat, the West is NOT at DEFCON 2.

I suspect that the disinformation being spread comes from the website quoted earlier. NOT a reliable source.

To say that the USA is at DEFCON level 2 is 'false news'

Re: Millions of us might be **** if we ignore the Russian-Ukraine war

One aspect of this war that seems to have avoided the attention of the various MSM commentators is morale in the opposing militaries. Russians: Average squaddie likely to be a conscript and **** frightened and confused as to what is going on. He will be thinking, 'why am I attacking a fellow Slavic ...

Re: Millions of us might be **** if we ignore the Russian-Ukraine war

About 22 years ago a despot attacked a weaker neighboring country that could by no means be called 'democratic'. The 'Coallition of the 'Willing' threw him out and inflicted huge losses on his military machine. Yet, in respect to the Russian occupation of the Ukraine, we **** about like a bunch of p...

Re: Your first ever flight

What I find interesting there, Smeags, is that you were actually trained in stalls and spins. My belief is that this requirement is no longer in the syllabus and that the focus is on stall avoidance.

Such a shame. And might have avoided accidents like AF 447.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V

Did a supermarket run yesterday and noticed a total lack of tissues, nose, for the blowing of.

This could be down to:

1. Brexit.
2. Supply chain issues.
3. A high incidence of the common cold in the area.

Re: Your first ever flight

1951. London to Singapore (obviously not non stop) in BOAC Argonaut. I was about 6 months old and travelling with my mother to join dad who was on 45 Sqn at Tengah.

I still have some vague memories of the return flight in a RAF Hastings some three years later.

The real shame in that sign is the grammatical error in the headline. And from a 'seat of learning' too.

Re: WTF is happening in the UK?

For some years it has been clear to anyone with a couple of grey cells in their cranium that a certain Boris Johnson: 1. Is a liar. 2. Lacks integrity. 3. Lacks moral compass. The question to MPs in the Conservative Party shouldn't be about what they do now that he has been caught out for the umptee...
