Re: The Smokin' Hot Where On Earth Thread Mk III

Clues: It's close to a town which attracts millions (between 5 and 8 depending on source) of tourists/visitors per annum. There is a very significant aviation related location a few miles away and an atrocious pub/restaurant called the Green Man a few minutes walk away. A Green Man would most likel...

pfffft! I spent four years working in Greece and never went to Santorini! Yes, I can imagine how the locals feel about the cruise ship visitors. It's a similar story on the Caribbean islands.

Re: Friday Jokes

Is there a demand for this ? This reminds of the 60s joke about the Englishman who goes to Spain for the first time. The first morning in the hotel, he requests an English breakfast; there is the usual bacon, sausage and egg, but additionally there are two sizeable meatballs. The Englishman tries t...

Re: The Smokin' Hot Where On Earth Thread Mk III

Am I right in thinking that this is in an area which would not normally be considered as wine-producing, eg somewhere in the UK? It is not UK. Do we have wine cellars like this in the UK? Dunno. It is an area which has produced wine for centuries. You pay in Euro. Something along the same lines... ...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread IV

Speaking of matters relating to health and welfare, will we be moved out of our properties into a community centre from Saturday noon while the site is down? I mean, there's nothing on the telly and pub beer is too expensive these days, so how will we entertain ourselves while the landlord moves ho...

Re: The Smokin' Hot Where On Earth Thread Mk III

Apologies for the aviation content, so let's get that bit out of the way first! It's a Beriev A-40, NATO reporting name Mermaid, known as Red 20. But where is it operating?
For a bonus point, can anyone name the species of bird sitting on the rock? o:-)

Re: The Smokin' Hot Where On Earth Thread Mk III

It is that one, I was hoping someone can name the streets, if only on the basis that I managed it so I'm sure someone else can. The lack of the roundabout made it a bit more challenging, I admit. A little more digging has now revealed that it is 4th Street and Daisy Avenue. It's a long time since I...

I think it may be the roundabout in Long Beach, where the lady who was driving ignored the fact that it was a roundabout.
Don't know the names of the streets concerned, though.

Re: The BBC.

I totally agree. Not only that, but they show athletics all day (when it's not snooker), and neither attract much in the way of spectatorship - the athletics stadia are invariably half empty. The sports which are worth watching are all on Sky or BT anyway, which people seem happy to pay for, so why ...

However, there doesn't seem to be any infrastructure behind it, so maybe it's an ex-railway station.

Re: Antisemitism.

I repeat a post I made almost a year ago : I recently had some postings I'd made removed from a business travel forum, for stating that the TLV routes are about the most unpopular with airline staff and crews due to the characteristics and behaviour of many of the passengers on that route. Apparent...

Artnoon all.
I think this might be the SS Rogaland, berthed in Stavanger, Norweay.
I think you might be right! Interesting history connected to that ship.

Yes, there is a ship very similar to this at the Vasa museum in Stockholm, but this isn't it. Vaguely Nordic may lead you there.
Yes, that was my first thought! Torshavn, Faroes?

Tramp! :) Not you om, the ship. Looks like an example which traversed the Indian Ocean in its' day. Looks like there was some passenger accommodation around the stern. It's clearly been preserved and the background buildings look vaguely Nordic to me, though it's not Stockholm.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread IV

G-CPTN I have fond memories of the Indian restaurant from the days when I lived in the area. Has it re-opened? I know we lost the pub where I used to stay (in Ovingham) as the result of (I think) Desmond. The Indian restaurant re-opened after six months and the pub at Ovingham is finally being work...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread IV

Yesterday we had a flood (courtesy of Storm Ciara). Early morning predictions were that it would equal Storm Desmond (which devastated 40 dwellings, the pub and the Indian restaurant for many months). One of the Desmond events was the relocation of a skip from the cemetery over several fences and a...
