Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V

Thames Water shareholders are reportedly refusing to stump up cash for the necessary huge system rectification works (having received huge dividends on the way, of course) meaning there is a threat of nationalisation thus costing the taxpayer millions. Maggie and OffWat did a good job, didn't they....

My choice:- DE HAVILLAND DH.98 MOSQUITO The Mosquito (known affectionally as the 'the Wooden Wonder' and/or 'the Mossie') was one of the most versatile combat aircraft of WWII. The aircraft was used as a light bomber, fighter-bomber, night fighter, maritime strike aircraft and for photo-reconnaissa...

Re: Baltimore bridge collapse

Shome mishtake shurely? The Dali is showing as 95, 000 gross tons - not one of the biggest, but big enough! I recall talking to the captain of a supertanker some years ago, and listening to his explanation that the sheer kinetic energy of the vessel means that it cannot stop quickly. It is clear tha...

Re: Millions of us might be **** if we ignore the Russian-Ukraine war

There's more than usual activity on the western side of the Black Sea today. The usual RAF R135 is there, together with a US Navy P8 and a Global Hawk south of Sebastopol at 52,000ft. These are all regulars in the area, but not normally at the same time.

Re: Baltimore bridge collapse

Note the large amount of black smoke from the vessel at around 'lights out' time. This is normally indicative of putting the vessel into full astern (reverse), which may have been an instinctive reaction from the pilot/captain, but the beast is never going to stop in a hurry. Thankfully it was in th...

Re: Millions of us might be **** if we ignore the Russian-Ukraine war

This whole 'escaping to Ukraine' thing is being laughed at by Ukrainians. Effectively, Ukraine's border posts with other other countries are closed. Ukrainians can't leave and very few foreigners can enter, so it's difficult to imagine how a group of Tajiks would get into Ukraine, especially with Ta...

Impressive fireworks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eKmfUf86tw And these forces are supposed to have sent 4 guys to burn down a concert hall? And escape to UKR - provided, on the long way "home", there's fuel available in petrol stations when needed :D. 2 landing ships, Yamal and Azov, were hit,...

... I remember one evening going to a villa, far outside Athens. The food and company were excellent, but what I remember most was the carpet of stars above us. Some of them even shot across the sky. A few days after finally retiring and moving here in 2011 we visited my family in Ontario. On the w...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V

If anyone in northern latitudes has clear skies tonight, the aurora is showing as very active on the Finnish met. site. It is clear here but not yet dark at the moment. Watching the aurora is the last thing on my bucket list trip wise I remember one evening going to a villa, far outside Athens. The...

Re: Millions of us might be **** if we ignore the Russian-Ukraine war

I see the ISIS guys are from Tajikistan (at least that's what we're being told), so I can't help thinking that they've been put up to this, in order to give His Putiness yet another reason (if one were needed) to attack Ukraine. It's ludicrous to suggest that they were heading to Ukraine. How the he...

Some good news , pangolins aren’t that well known compared to Elephants and Rhinos.

On a couple of the Freeview channels, there are regular appeals for money to help protect them. Used for 'traditional Chinese medicine', apparently. Say no more

Re: Millions of us might be **** if we ignore the Russian-Ukraine war

I attended an aviation-related function at the Crocus Arena on a couple of occasions. It really is massive and there were at least three helicopters (with rotors extended) there on one occasion. It's very close to the Moscow Ring Road, (their equivalent of the M25, and at least as busy, usually with...

I’ve only just discovered that Yorkshire Tea isn’t grown in Yorkshire, I’m shocked I tell you :-o
They are lying, Woody - it's grown in greenhouses on the outskirts of Harrogate :) Lovely tea, though - I wouldn't drink anything else!

Supermarket tea ? English Breakfast is all I’ll ever drink. Any Brand. Keep your Earl Grey’s and the like. Not my cup of tea. ( Pun intended ) Flying around the world cured me of milk and sugar too, tea or coffee black is now my standard. All I needed was tea bags or instant coffee in my briefcase,...

Do please elaborate, what is 'chechen-style'?
The Nord-Ost theatre hostage crisis by Chechens (when ruz was killing them). It has been referred to in several news agencies.

Why would ISIS do it??
Reprisal for Russia's UN vote?

Re: Chaos in Cuba

To my mind at least, the country produces two main products that the world no longer wants. Tobacco, for obvious reasons, and sugar which is increasingly grown as a beet in countries that are far north or south of the tropics, plus there are so many artificial alternatives today. Its biggest import...
