Re: The Cook Islands

I went there in the late 70s when I was on the ANZ DC10, with BA. ANZ used to have a service that routed AKL-RAR-HNL once? a week and I think they were the only operator to Raro. Iirc I think we stayed at a hotel called the Rarotongan, lovely place. Very unspoilt then but I imagine it is just anothe...

The price of copper?

Two chaps, an off road capable cherry picker, and an empty cable drum on a lorry turned up on my drive this morning. They proceeded to remove the obsolete (Finland does not use fixed line telephones any more, maybe in towns?) overhead telephone cabling, wound it onto the drum and took it away. The, ...

ISAs

I am sure someone, OFSO?, knows the answer as I need some help understanding the rules around ISAs. I have read several web pages, including gov.uk, and have found it somewhat confusing. I invested the maximum, £20k, in the 2023/24 tax year, and it is still invested, in a cash isa. Can I now put ano...

Re: Friday Jokes

Re a couple of posts back.

Mine was a 1936 Austin 10.

Bought for £5 and which disintegrated on the partially built Northam Bridge in Southampton, 1965?.

My second was a Ford Poplar 100E, which my sister rolled.

It didn't do too well after that, but my sister survived.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V

What does an Englishman, in Finland, do on Friday evening after dinner? Clear snow. Another 10/15 cm today, it stopped about 2000, but, if I hadn't sort it out tonight, it would be either a lot of slush or melted and frozen solid by the morning. Job done, after a few glasses of wine and Elgar, The D...

About 15cm, which I will clear, when it stops snowing.

For Reddo, it was -30 overnight in Kittila.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V

Annoyingly, thick cloud is now covering the sky but fmi.fi (there are English pages) is still showing very high aurora probability.

Haven't heard from wife's Ivalo relations but they have to be up at 0500 for work tomorrow and "Voice of Finland" is on tv, grrr!,

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread

The only place I have been to on Corsica is Bonafacio, on a boat many years ago, so perhaps it is there.

Mrs Ex-A has got me thinking.

Corsica, west coast?

Google shows a similar picture and suggests it is Villanovo but I am not certain.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V

If anyone in northern latitudes has clear skies tonight, the aurora is showing as very active on the Finnish met. site.

It is clear here but not yet dark at the moment.

Re: MH370

As Boac says, "top up oxygen" is quite a normal entry that appears in the tech. log. The comp(any?) fuel, to my mind, could be what was in BA recorded as extra fuel. It may be a figure determined as neccessary on that route and that day by the company to differentiate it from extra fuel requested by...

Re: United 777 Loses Wheel on T/O from SFO

Lost a nose wheel (axle failure) turning onto runway 26R in Berlin, many years ago. As luck would have it, the sudden difficulty lining up caused me to ask to have it inspected and we didn't take off. I, to this day, wonder whether there would have been so much vibration that I would have abandonned...

Your comment caused me to google "nokia" and read the story

Googling Elop (Stephen) made quite interesting reading also.

Re: Looking for a cheap simple 4G candy bar

Hmm, Nokia sold it's mobile phone business to Microsoft a while back, quite annoyed the Finns at the time. An ex? MS exec. (Elop?) was CEO when the deal was done. I understand it was not a success. Nokia branded phones are sold by somebody else now, I am sure google can tell who. I was very loyal to...
