Re: My first car
I believe the Orkneys and Shetlands didn't have roundabouts in the test because there weren't any. Ricardian can perhaps advise. There are now one or two roundabouts on mainland Orkney. However, back in the 1970s we lived in Brora, Sutherland. In the whole of Sutherland there were no roundabouts or...

Re: It has been a wet April!
Those stones look as if they need a coat of paint Ricardian! Not stones, very few of those kicking around. They are old ammunition boxes filled with sand or sand/cement, the SWOs pride & joy. But yes, they will need a coat of paint before the next AOCs. AOC MEAF was Johnny Johnson, notoriously "pic...

Re: And it was in Jan '69....
....we returned from a few days down at Masirah to find Sharjah looking like an aircraft carrier, a runway surrounded by water. The Shackletons that had been left there looked a bit like those pewter tankards that were hand beaten. One of the techies was so overcome with his excitement to describe ...

Re: Rainmakers in Dubai
I remember that in Limassol (1965-67) they filled the road drains with sand during the hot summer months, can't remember how they cleared them ready for the rains

Re: Rainmakers in Dubai
I was stationed at RAF Sharjah 1963-64 when it rained for the first time in a few years complete with accompanying thunder, lightning & storm F10 winds. Lots of damage to buildings and the airfield was flooded. One bonus was the desert blooming, quite literally; an absolutely fantastic display of fl...

Re: Friday Jokes
I scared some Jehovah's Witnesses today by going to the door stark naked. I'm not sure what scared them more, me being naked or the fact that I knew where they lived.

Fuschia leaves are starting to show, always a good sign that spring is on the way. ... ^ I bet they're a lovely sight when in flower. I used to have a fuchsia here but the Gardener/Lawn Man is not a plantsman, and that was one of the casualties... The Gardening Fairy knows much more :) Morning is o...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
Good morning on a blue dome day with bright sunshine and 13.7°C, expecting 20°C by early afternoon. Deciduous trees have thoroughly coloured up, and are well into shedding their leaves. I see that Friday 19th is Poppy Day when sellers will be about the streets and poppies may be worn; Anzac Day nex...

Re: Friday Jokes
The truth, as so many of us will attest.... In the beginning was the Plan. And then came the Assumptions. And the Assumptions were without form. And the Plan was without substance. And darkness was upon the face of the Rank and File. And they spoke amongst themselves, saying, ''It is a crock of sh1t...

Why do all washing machines (or is it only Samsungs) play Schubert's "The Trout" song when they finish? It was only a few weeks ago when I was wearing my recently-updated NHS hearing aids in the kitchen that I realised that all the electrical equipment (dishwasher, air fryer, Kenwood Chef, slow coo...

Re: Friday Jokes
A hiker, dishevelled, clearly shaken and out of breath, enters a remote Highland village pub. "You won't believe this," he says to the landlord. "I've just been attacked by a leopard!" "Really?" said the landlord. "Yes!", replied the hiker. "A leopard in the Highlands of Scotland! It's quite incredi...

A35 van, purchased in 1969 for £199/19s/11d and paid for on HP. One previous owner - a fish merchant in Torpoint. Reliable runabout which took me from Plymouth to Manchester via the A38 several times. I had the van for about 5 years. However, despite scrubbing the interior with a variety of industri...

Re: Friday Jokes
I was walking in the jungle (as you do) and I saw a lizard on his hind legs, telling jokes.
I turned to a local tribesman and remarked "That lizard's really funny!" to which he replied "That's not a lizard, it's a stand-up chameleon."
