Re: When and what was your "finest half hour" ?

Too many choices, but I do know what was the worst half-hour - and it wasn't the heart attack.

I'd much rather he shagged Dianne Abbott than the country.

East Germany? I've been there; well just Brandenberg.

Re: No.1 School of Technical Training, RAF Halton

How did we get by on 9 items of laundry a week? Easy. We were teenagers... We kept our rooms tidy by throwing everything into our lockers and forcing the door shut. I remember the sock test - throw the sock at the wall and if it doesn't stick it's good to go. When I was in hospital with the broken ...

Re: No.1 School of Technical Training, RAF Halton

PMRAF Hospital, Halton no doubt. I was warded there for a week after breaking an ankle just before Xmas '65. Locking had apprentices? Goodness me: you learn something new every day. Alisoncc , yes, I'm a Rook and I salute you - but do you know, I have one of the 32nd living in my patch? A proper old...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread 1

G-AYSL A long time ago in a land far away... Big Airways had to ground all their three engined flying machines because of cracks in important bits of structure. Aircraft were borrowed in from everywhere, including a B707 from Dan Dare's Flying Circus. The first machine to cross the Atlantic from Ne...

No.1 School of Technical Training, RAF Halton

Today in history: The 105th and penultimate entry of Aircraft Apprentices were attested 52 years ago today, starting at 08:00hrs on the ground floor of Block 8, No.3(A) Wing, Maitland Barracks and thence for their first encounter with "Fagash Flo'" at the RAF Halton barbers shop. Thus bega...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread 1

'@' is Shift, 2 on my Mac keyboard and the double inverted commas are Shift. single inverted comma. This is the exact opposite to the Windows keyboard, but as far as inverted commas go, is more logical. Today is the 52nd anniversary of the day I took the Queen's shilling, became a "Trenchard Br...

Reported today that an Air France pilot spotted floating debris off Reunion during approach. Not that it means its from MH 370 of course. There's lots of debris floating in the sea.

Re: How to piss off the Kiwis ! All Blacks NOT Happy

Yers. I know. But after years of working with Kiwis and Ozzies I can't resist a needle. Our powerplant man used to say he only supported two teams - the All Blacks and anyone who was playing Australia. I like the Morris Dancing idea, but feel it would best be deployed at cricket test matches - "...

if I can find the iOS9 update to go on it.

Go to "Settings" then "General", where "Software Updates" should be second from the top. Your iOs9 update should be available directly from there.

Re: Islamic compliant sunscreen

The problem is that some time during during the Medina years, the consumption of 'strong drink' was totally banned. The ban was never mentioned in the Koran itself. A rough transliteration would say something like: "Of divining arrows and strong drink (gambling and intoxicants) there is in them...

When they insist on perfoming their Hakka our team should respond, half naked, covered in woad and banging swords on their shields. (For authenticity, the prop forwards should be completely naked and half crazed on Mead)

Re: Apple IOS 9

Did my iPad this morning. It gives me an extra 0.5 Gigs of available storage and seems to run faster. It allegedly gives me an extra hour of battery life, but I haven't been able to assess that yet. Everything works fine and the upgrade was trouble free.

Re: Who uses a smart phone and connects to the net

I went for Android because I had an iPod Touch and an iPad already, so there was nothing on the phone that I didn't already have to hand. The Moto360 Smartwatch is much cheaper than an Apple Watch and has all the useful functions - message and mail alerts, voice activation of phone, SMS dictation, t...

No lines for passport control
Really? Try travelling on Eurostar. They're only checking to make sure you're not actually subject to immigration control, but the queues are there all right.

Pratts Bottom is just down the road from Bromley
Coots End is between Luton and Harpenden. Harpenden is of course, where one can find how far is the Old Cock Inn.

Re: Who uses a smart phone and connects to the net

I use a Samsung S3 and it connects automatically whenever it has a signal. I use it to receive e-mails and SMS as well as for phone calls. Everyone I know who has a smartphone uses their camera! I've never used most of the installed "Apps" - just the map and Google Earth. The only Apps I l...

Re: Radio

Besides the BBC World Service used to get American Forces Radio in many places. When I was in Singapore in the 60s I bought a Zenith Transoceanic multi band radio. In the right conditions we could pick up American Forces Viet Nam [AFVN] on it and their music was far superior to the British Forces r...
