Re: Chaos in Cuba

To my mind at least, the country produces two main products that the world no longer wants. Tobacco, for obvious reasons, and sugar which is increasingly grown as a beet in countries that are far north or south of the tropics, plus there are so many artificial alternatives today. Its biggest import...

Re: Chaos in Cuba

Let's see now, 50 years of American supported corruption and exploitation brought to a halt by Castro so America begins a never ending progamme of economic warfare in all it's forms. So yea, I can see how you might want to blame the Cuban 'man-in-the-street' for that.

Re: Chaos in Cuba

Tourism brings in some foreign currency and provides menial jobs, but Cuba, like Gaza, has no natural resources, and is an agrarian economy. I don't think America has ever forgiven Castro for taking away their island paradise, which was particularly useful following prohibition and WWII. Cuba has n...

Re: Chaos in Cuba

Dec 10, 1898 to March 13, 1958 - a period to be celebrated in Cuban history. In 1913, President Mario García Menocal announced Cuba's deregulation law, saying that regulated prostitution was "incompatible with ... the spirit of freedom that governs our nation".[19] During the first half of the 20th...

Re: Chaos in Cuba

It is a pity you chose to chop my quote! You missed this bit ...and little was said about democracy. With the loyal support of Batista, Mafioso boss Meyer Lansky developed Havana into an international drug port. Cabinet offices were bought and sold and mlitary officials made huge sums on smuggling a...

Re: Chaos in Cuba

Dec 10, 1898 to March 13, 1958 - a period to be celebrated in Cuban history. Yeah right .... 1903 to 1958: Uprisings, Coups, Dictatorship 1933: Military coup. After the American military quashes three Cuban uprisings in as many decades, the U.S. backs a military coup led by Sgt. Fulgencio Batista. ...

On the verge of collapse? Does that mean that more than a century of anti-Cuban policies and activities are about to 'bear fruit'?
