Re: We need more
I knew this as an irate child, always blamed for the mess by my mother, when I had done a few tests flushing with the lid up and could see that random droplets would land on the seat and nearby surfaces. Didn't have the fancy laser gadgets back then, of course.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
Fairly productive weekend here. New hard disk arrived for the server on Saturday, so installed that. It was part of a RAID array, so I left it to get on with it. Also finally got around to taking the dishwasher out to see why the heater wasn't working. Deduced it was the element, not the thermostat,...

Re: Rant of the Day v2.
My most recent packages arrived sensibly early in the day. Amazon stuff often says "by 10pm" and I think sometimes we've been last stop on route because it was close to that time, but the past couple made it by lunchtime, allowing me to start using the contents that day.

Re: Nice Tailwind!
I've done over 800mph before now. I was on a Virgin flight and the captain noted in his PA announcement that we had an impressive tailwind and that we'd joined the small club of people who'd exceeded that speed. Probably 2008. Of course, all you fast jet fighter pilots are probably sniggering at the...

If something goes bump in the night here, I tend to blame one of the cats for knocking something off a shelf or counter. Sometimes it's one of the dogs lying down, if they do it on certain parts of the floor, there's a noticeable bump.

Re: Osprey down off Japan
In February 2023 the military said while they had still not determined a root cause for the hard clutch incidents, officials were 99% sure the clutch problem was fixed. If you don't understand the root cause then it will come back to bite you. The 737 rudder hard-over issue was like this too, until...

It doesn't ask me to log in. I wonder if they're geolocating NZ residents and getting them to log in, but not the rest of us?

Morning all, bit blowy here at the moment, in a bit of a gap between storm fronts rolling in off the Pacific. Took Faraday out for a walk this morning and was treated to a full rainbow thanks to the low sun, fortunately downwind so no danger of getting wet. Steady wind from the south, so all the Bay...

Yes, it's Brunel's old train shed at Temple Meads. Based on preceding posts, G-CPTN has the throttle (or regulator, if it's a steam loco).

Saw a banner in support of Nikki Haley the other day, made reference to not wanting a senile geriatric for President, which I guess covers her for both primary and the main event.

Faraday decided she wanted a new couch. This is the one on or near which Cassini was born (I found him on the floor to the left where that box is, with Faraday closely observing him). It's now outside to be broken down and a new one acquired for free courtesy of Nextdoor is in its place. Cheaper tha...

Re: Found Dogs
Well done to D#2 for getting them reunited. Many years ago, I worked in Bishops Stortford. We had an established routine at lunchtime where a bunch of us would walk down to a group of shops to get lunch. One day, there were a couple of boxers roaming around, which we tagged as we walked. Then they c...

Re: What I do in my spare time.
I am in almost a reverse situation. I got qualified, did so at the request of the emergency organisation I was working for, but have never used it and am thinking of getting into ham radio. Any advice for a newbie who understands all the theory but none of the practicalities would be appreciated, e...

Shades of 1997, I guess. there comes a time when you've f**ked up so badly that you know there's no chance in hell of getting re-elected. The problem is that I'm not convinced the alternative is going to be much better.
