Re: Accident to Police helicopter in Arkansas
A quarter century ago I 'learned' to fly a helicopter using FS FlightSim. At first I was uncoordinated, so I had many failures to get off the ground and many 'tilt' crashes on the pad, but eventually I got the hang of how to coordinate the controls, and although it wasn't real flying I managed to be...

Re: SCAMMERS !
When I am bothered by these calls I act the stupid old man and repeat their words or answer the quetions with "Yes" even when they reel off multiple choices (such as which age group do I fall in - 20 to 40, 40 to 60, 60 to 80 for example). The half-wit cannot adjust their script and keep repeating t...

Re: Nerd's Corner - Ice cool aircraft recognition game.
The concept was initiated by the US Navy with the intention of providing an aircraft capable of operating from ships, however the skill needed to 'reverse park' the aircraft by landing tail-first was beyond the average navy pilot.

I remember this from my childhood, but the words 'Boeing Vertol' that come to mind don't return images (early helicopters appear instead).

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread IV
Yeah, I've been zapped a couple of times out and about. Esp in the Kimberley in Oz. A funny thing happened to me up there. Standard issue thundery banging and crashing about. Lots of rain and sparkles. I stepped out of my mate's car and I was soaked to the skin immediately. I opened the metal gate ...

Re: Should we be more worried about plastic than global warming?
From the interweb:- Black plastic is the least valuable (that’s why your bin bags are black), and the reason is simple. You can dye clear plastic black, but you can’t dye black plastic clear. Black plastic is very low value, so black food trays, bin bags, pvc guttering pipes etc, most often won't ge...

Re: Should we be more worried about plastic than global warming?
Whilst I can understand that current methods of automatically sorting 'waste' results in black plastic not being recognised. If it is, actually recyclable, then manual collection of these black trays should be possible. If, however, it is not possible to recycle black plastics due to the blackness, ...

Re: Bridge collapse near Genoa (IT)
The concrete made by the ancient Romans was incredibly hard wearing, tough and resilient. Their secret sauce was a volcanic mineral called Pozzolana. It's morphology and chemistry was/is extraordinarily well suited to the formulation of top-quality concrete and had remarkable properties such as act...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread IV
At work we had an expert on all matters. Having decreed that the poplar trees had succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease, he then went on to hold forth about the migration of birds of Britain. He said that the majority of birds flew south for the winter, but the greater majority remained and didn't migrate....

We were supposed to receive transcripts of the proceedings - still waiting today. I was banned (permanently it seems) from TOP R&N for suggesting (regarding a delayed accident report) that the Italians were renowned for their laid back attitude and no sense of urgency (I quoted 'Domani' as being th...

I was amused, when discussing the final arrangements for our wedding with the vicar (a lifelong family friend) when he paused and pointed upwards and said that he had "had a word" regarding the weather (which turned out fine and sunny, despite being in March).
