"If you don't like anything that we are doing then stay away and please refrain from leaving bad negative vibes, it makes you look narrow-minded and desperately stupid," it wrote
And good on them!! ..... Over this side of the ditch, a brand of cheese 'Coon', named after the founder Edward William Coon (1871–1934) has changed its name to 'Cheer'.....I think 300 of the 360 replies in the comment section were appalled that they would change their name after 100+ years and maintained they would no longer buy it!...including me!!

The Aboriginal activist who sought the name change said it was doubtful the chees was named after someone....he's probably a Holocaust denier as well then!...

And the crap continues with the announcement by a Melborne University decreeing that staff and students should not use the term- MOTHER - but use the term --Gestation Person-.Where do these clowns come from, and why are they not called out for being complete bloody imbeciles?

Why do people strive to improve their lives ( in their opinion ) by moving to another Country, then immediately try to change their adopted Country to accept things that they had been so determined to leave ?

When in Rome ..........

QED.

First came across this at age 16 growing up in England, and bought a motor bike and had to wear a helmet, but Sikh immigrants were excused ? ( not that helmets weren't a good idea of course, but tell that to a 16 year old !! )

Puhoi Pub ? and then there's Guy Gibson’s dog. Rhymes with Digger. Historical fact. But then the BLM, Woke, QUnon mob probably think the Norman Conquest, Magna Carta, Henry the Eighth, Fire of London, etc.were just conspiracy theories ?

I've mostly accepted the US but I still think they'd improve things in a few areas where the UK does it better. Some I know I'm stuck with - you're not going to abolish 4-way stops, despite them being hugely inefficient and bad for the environment, because that's just how most people around here have grown up. Government might work a bit better if they'd introduce the concept of opposition days, as found at Westminster. Speed limits are crazy, almost as if they want people to be confused because it's changing every block or so - in the UK I could stand on a road, look both ways and be 99% sure what the speed limit was. Over here it could be pretty much any multiple of 5 from 25 to 80.

And then there's taxes. For a country founded on a dispute over taxes the US sure did drop the ball there.

Here is an article by Michael Bassett.

Michael Bassets summation of the current Wokeness

Michael Bassett CNZM QSO is a former Labour Party member of the New Zealand House of Representatives and cabinet minister in the reformist fourth Labour government.

Michael Bassett is New Zealand’s best-known political historian. He is the author of fifteen books, nearly all of them with a political theme.

Minister of Internal Affairs (1987–1990), Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage (1987–1990)

He has taught history at the University of Auckland and was J.B. Smallman Professor of History at the University of Western Ontario during the early 1990s. He was Fulbright Professor of New Zealand History at Georgetown University in Washington DC in 2002. He spent ten years (1994-2004) as a tribunal member of the Waitangi Tribunal that deals with claims by New Zealand’s first settlers, the Maori. Between 2009 and 2013 he was a Board member of the Museum of New Zealand: Te Papa Tongarewa.

In the New Year’s Honours 2018 Dr Bassett was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for his services to history.

New Zealanders' Modern Cultural Cringe
18/01/2021

A bizarre craze seems to be sweeping New Zealand right now. All things derived from Europe except our creature comforts must be set aside as we are expected to embrace all things Maori. It's racism on a grand scale. No longer do our television stations refer to New Zealand. In fact, we are lucky if its Aotearoa-New Zealand. No reference to the fact that, as Michael King shows, Maori didn't have a name for these lands, and only came to accept "Aotearoa" in relatively recent times. Several newspapers are falling into line and are now calling our country Aotearoa, a name unknown to most people beyond our shores. No public debate. We are expected to acquiesce. The name "New Zealand" which dates back to Abel Tasman's visit in 1642 came more into early use and is the name by which our land has always been recognized abroad. It won't be long before the woke who are driving all this insist on officially changing our country's name. Instead of being proud New Zealanders, we'll be expected to call ourselves Aotearoaians. They'll try to avoid a referendum lest it results in rejection like occurred with changing the flag. Just impose it! The woke have no respect for democracy.

Government departments and public institutions are being renamed at such a rapid rate that it isn't clear what the names refer to. Waka Kotahi for Transport? Why? Since all forms of transport except the canoe were unknown to Maori, and were imported from overseas, why a Maori name? Where did Waka Kotahi come from? Waka, yes. But Kotahi? It doesn't appear in the revered Bruce Biggs' Maori dictionary. Waka Kotahi wasn't a term used by Maori before settlers arrived in the 1840s and 1850s. There are other institutions with self-bestowed Maori names that are unrecognizable to ordinary Kiwis.
Radio New Zealand, too, has been working full time. They are deleting the words both "radio" and "New Zealand" from everyday use. Nowadays it's "Te Irirangi o Aotearoa" or "RNZ". Don't mention dreaded English terms! Some Radio New Zealand reporters fall over themselves trying to conform to a ruling from on high that they should introduce themselves in Te Reo, despite the fact that the concept of radio came from overseas, and was absolutely unknown to Maori.

We have also been told recently that all streets in New Zealand are to be given a Maori name. Wow. That will be an expensive exercise! Who will dream up the new names? The Maori Language Commission that seems to be churning out new words at 200 kph? And since Maori were very thin on the ground in the Auckland area in 1840 and were soon rapidly outnumbered by settlers, it won't be appropriate either. A relevant fact provided to members of the Waitangi Tribunal during the Kaipara case I heard was that in 1840 there were only 800 Maori living on the million acres of land between the Kaipara and East Tamaki. That fact will be conveniently overlooked. Nothing is sufficiently disrespectful for Pakeha whose street names quite often have family or historical significance to them.

Similar examples of cultural cringe are showing up with the move to teach New Zealand history in our schools. Scratch the surface and it becomes clear that those driving the idea want to downplay the huge significance of the arrival of European culture in New Zealand. Rather, they intend to replace it with only partially accurate accounts of the difficulties Maori faced when brought into contact with a more developed culture. Recently, I sought from the Ministry of Education details about who was designing the curriculum. Back came the names of a couple of black arm band school teachers and a collection of Maori radicals. There were a couple of academics, both Maori. No serious Pakeha historian in sight. We can say with certainty that a skewed version of New Zealand history will be devised, one that leaves out things like the Musket Wars where Maori did irreparable harm to their own economy and society. Instead, there will be much concentration on "evil" colonial land purchasers and settler governments, and excessive Maori land confiscations at the end of the wars of the 1860s. About the last of these, of course students must be told. The confiscations came on top of the damage that Maori had already done to themselves and helped further depress the Maori economy and damage Maori society. But what is taught to modern students should not exclude everything that reflects badly on Maori themselves. Moreover, kids need to know that up to 50% of Maori in the country in the 1860s sided with the Crown. And they need to be told why. The term "Kupapa Maori" to describe those Maori is regarded by modern Maori as equivalent to being called an "Uncle Tom". But it was respected in earlier times.

And if one needs any more evidence that cultural cringe has reached massive proportions in Auckland, have a look at the programme for the Auckland Arts Festival between 4-21 March 2021. Its Maori name, Te Ahurei Toi O Tamaki, takes precedence on the front cover. Remember, that in Auckland, Maori are only 11.5% of the total population. Pacific Islanders are 13% of Auckland's population and Asians constitute more than 25%, according to the latest census. People of European ethnicity make up more than 50% of Auckland's population, but in the eyes of the organisers of the festival they don't count. The programme includes "kapa haka, Maori artists, waiata sing alongs and korero [that] will bring the taonga that is te reo front and centre for audiences". Really? In a city where almost 90% of people are not of Maori ethnicity? Why hasn't Auckland City, Creative New Zealand, Foundation North and a collection of worthy sponsors spared a thought for the overwhelming majority of Auckland citizens and ratepayers? Where is the "equity" in this festival?

Answer: too much power has been allowed to slip into the hands of crusaders who for too long seem to have been able to commandeer the resources of others for their own political ends.

When, or will, Aucklanders, and New Zealanders as a whole, stop cringing and wake up to what is being done to their culture and largely with their money?

A very well researched, and well written article that no doubt many New Zealanders agree with.

Agree with ? Absolutely, and I'm not even a New Zealander, except of course by residence and passport choice in recent years, I'm definitely not an aotao wotsit, and will resist that to my death. New Zealand Lives Matter. NZLM ! Spread the word.

'Tis a world wide plague, hence Iran, Sri Lanka, Mumbai etc. My wife is from California, and Covid excepted, we try to spend some time there every year. Using the telephone now one hears " Press 1 for Spanish and 2 for English " spoken in Spanish the first time, of course.

A plague on all of them.
And then there's taxes. For a country founded on a dispute over taxes the US sure did drop the ball there.
As a dual citizen, USA and California, tell that to my wife ! Tax Treaties ? Don't make me laugh, just pay double, and when you try to telephone the relevant US Dept. expect to be transferred to someone speaking Pidgin English with a Spanish accent, situated in the Philippines, 'cos you've been transferred to the South Pacific Dept. No Option. The US will refuse to speak to you.
Impossible.

Is it any wonder this stuff is getting spread around the world, principal drops the standard required in New Zealand schools to allow "The Culcha" to take precedence

Oh dear -from the Daily Telegraph - an opinion piece by their Defence Correspondent Con Coughlin. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/0 ... weak-link/

Which has been picked up by the New Zealand Herald: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/nz-china- ... K6JFTMBE4/

Some extracts from the Telegraph which may not be accessible behind a paywall:

Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s tiresomely woke prime minister, often complains that one of the biggest challenges her country faces in promoting its interests overseas is that, owing to its remote geographical location, it sometimes finds itself left off maps of the world. Now, thanks to Wellington’s naive decision to prioritise trade with China over its membership of the elite Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network, Ms Ardern can expect her country’s isolation to deepen further as New Zealand faces the very real prospect of expulsion from the alliance over its pro-Beijing stance.

The New Zealand Labour leader’s preference for cosying up to China’s communist rulers comes at a time when the consensus among the world’s leading democracies is that Beijing poses the greatest threat to their long-term well-being and prosperity. It is for this reason that leaders of the other members of the Five Eyes alliance – Britain, the US, Canada and Australia – have been pressing for the group to issue a joint communique denouncing Beijing’s suppression of liberty in Hong Kong, as well as its repression of the Uyghur Muslims.

This follows the alliance’s decision last year to expand its remit beyond its core role, dating back to its formation during the Second World War, of collecting and sharing intelligence. The network now also seeks to promote “shared values” on democracy and human rights. Yet attempts by the Five Eyes to present a united front against Beijing have been thwarted by the New Zealand government’s preference for maintaining cordial ties with Beijing.

...........

Ms Ardern can also expect her pro-human rights credentials to come under closer scrutiny. Previously, Ms Ardern has declared her support for “the values of human rights, social justice, equality, democracy and the role of communities”. How this squares with her aspiration to befriend a Chinese regime that is persisting with its crackdown on Hong Kong’s democracy movement by detaining and imprisoning activists is for the New Zealand electorate to decide.

What is not in doubt is that, by seeking closer ties with Beijing, Ms Ardern risks isolating her country from allies like neighbouring Australia, whose own trading relationship with Beijing has suffered heavily because of Canberra’s criticism of China’s attempts to cover up the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as its assault on Hong Kong.

We live in an age when, as US President Joe Biden has warned, countries that value democracy need to work together to counter the threat posed by authoritarian regimes like China. By choosing Beijing at the expense of her Five Eyes allies, Ms Ardern risks eroding New Zealand’s credibility on the global political map.

Ardern is now in a difficult position. If she upsets the Chinese bullies she may lose or at least have a large part of the country's exports interfered with as Australia has found or carry on and earn the ire of the West. To be fair, the cosying up to China was going on long before she came to power - she has just continued what National started - but NZ definitely has too many eggs in one basket now.

Oh, FFS! I've no doubt they are very sincere and dedicated to their intention to make the country reliant on unreliable sources of energy in the name of stopping climate change but I just wish they would take their 'struggle' to the major polluters of the planet like China, India and Russia. It makes sense to have one's own house in order but NZ produces a fraction of the world's pollution. At least the Swiss have taken that line and refused to harm their economy when the serious polluters do sweet F.A.

On the matter of 'wokeness' I'm delighted that the film about the mosque massacre will be pulled and those behind it will not enrich themselves on the suffering, but I fear that the government is sliding into creating more and more 'clients' who are dependent on the state and therefore likely to vote the source of their income back into power. The opposition is useless at present and unless someone can kick it back into life before the next election we'll have Jacinda and her green mates for another three years. She learnt the Blair lessons well in London.

While I'm having a toot I'll say I'm sick of being advised on how to pronounce Maori words by woke people. It doesn't happen the other way so I'll do my best and support the grandchildren's efforts but refuse to be drawn into that particular argument. :D

I agree, can't even pronounce Aotowotsit, never mind spell it. I wouldn't dream of being disrespectful or criitical of Maori, let them carry on doing what they want to do regarding their past heritage, and speak their language amongst themselves if they want to, but they only form 15% ( at last count i saw ) of the total population.so leave the rest of us 85% to get on with our lives unchanged too. They might consider themselves living in Aotowotsit, but the rest of us live in New Zealand. QED.
