Flying on top of the world: British daredevil and his team journey above the Arctic from Scotland to Canada in vintage aircraft

Team flew from Scotland to Canada over three days in vintage aircraft to prove what vehicles are capable of
They were led by British cameraman Timothy Allen who documented the trip over arctic tundra and glaciers
Trip took them over the US Army's Second World War base in Greenland, which was abandoned in 1947

A team of pilots led by a British daredevil cameraman have completed a 10-day voyage from Scotland to Canada in three vintage aircraft.

Timothy Allen, who is best known for his work on series such as The Human Planet, completed the voyage across Iceland and Greenland between June 20 and June 30.

Along the way Allen photographed spectacular glaciers, wind-swept tundra and the US Army's World War II airfield Bluie East 2 in Greenland - which was abandoned in 1947 and has been rusting away ever since.

Speaking about the dangers they faced, Allen said the main worry was 'icing' - where the freezing temperatures cause ice to form around the wings and engine, potentially causing a crash.

Allen said: 'It’s the one thing that everyone was very scared of. If you notice icing starting to appear on the wings then you have to drop down in altitude to where temperatures are higher.'

The flight was organised by travel specialists Vintage Air Rally, whose aim is to take very old aircraft and do incredible journeys with them.

The three planes used by Allen and his team were a 65-year-old Beech 18, a homemade kit-built Vanís RV8 and a 1980 Saratoga.

Lovely pics.
Icing is indeed the biggest problem. I ferried a Cessna 152 across the Pond West-East, and ended up at 50 ft over the Denmark Strait before the ice accumulated in 10 minutes IMC (unforecasted bank of cloud) started to melt. Just. Took 4 hours to go completely. Nice day down there though, and at least I was used to low level over sea.
