Beverley moving to Carlisle

#1 Post by Archer »

The Solway Aviation Museum has taken on the job of transporting the Blackburn Beverley from Fort Paull to Carlisle airport and looking after it:

This is good news and all power to their collective elbows, but what happens when Carlisle 'Lake District' airport closes? Let's hope we are not faced with another Bruntingthorpe.

Glad to hear that this last remaining example is to be preserved. I travelled on them twice - once in April 1963 from Bahrain to Sharjah and once in April 1964 from Sharjah to Bahrain. Who could forget clambering up the wooden bars, clutching a heavy holdall, and hauling onself onto the "upper deck" and the reverse process on arrival at your destination. I was given a tour of the cockpit and marvelled at the luxurious armchair seating for the pilot & co-pilot!

I don't know who owns Carlisle Airport but the fact that it is an operating airport is a good thing. Bruntingthorpe was and is fully privately owned and had (most of it) switched to a non-aeronautical use many years prior. Solway Aviation Museum is an established museum with a good track record. Getting another large airframe, and a unique one, could draw more visitors too.

Eddie Stobart?

Since May 2009, the airport has been owned by Esken (formerly known as Stobart Group) on a 150-year lease.

In comparing Carlisle with Bruntingthorpe, I had in mind the fact that the former operational areas were used for the storage of vehicles. One of the suitors for CAX is reportedly a Mr Tom Piatak, who recently bought Carlisle United FC, and is rumoured to be a suitor for the airfield. Mr Piatak runs a company called Magellan Logistics, based in Jacksonville...

They reached the £60k goal and are currently at £62k and the amount is still going up. Looks like the big move is on!

The first major bits have been lifted across the fort's wall and the pesky wing bolts have finally relented. See here and later:
