why can't airlines get the seats right?

I flew on Jetstar from Perth to Singapore 5 1/2 hours thereabouts.
then Singapore to Bangkok 2 1/2 hours thereabouts.
I couldnt believe how bad the seats were. for 4 hours I was in agony on the trip to singapore. seating space was so tight I couldn't wriggle comfortable at all.
spent an hour and a half in agony on the next leg as well.

I asked all the farangs (westerners) I met in thailand about Jetstar. common answer was yes we have flown jetstar ....once. bloody uncomfortable and no never again.
the jetstar aircraft were airbus A320's.

for my return flight I abandoned the jetstar ticket and flew back from Bangkok on Thai Airways.
aircraft was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
the seats were significantly more comfortable but why on earth are they so narrow?
we were 3 average sized Australian guys and sitting in A-B-C.
our shoulders weren't just touching they we're hard pressed together.
thankfully the aircraft was at less than capacity and we could move to other seats.
how you would be expected to fly like that has me beat.

Contrast with those experiences the Seatran Car Ferry that runs across to Koh Samui from Dongsuan. The passenger seats on the ferry are old american airlines seats.
huge by comparison and very comfortable.

A320's and Dreamliners are modern design aircraft. Why are the seats so bloody poor?

Count yourself lucky that you didn't have a tremend-oid sitting next to you in such narrow seats.

I flew perth to kuala lumpur to london on Malaysian Airlines.
the seats on the Boeing 747 were comfortable for the entire 14 hour flight.
so they didn't always get them wrong.

the modern seats are very wrong.

a tremendoid. heavens you couldn't have fitted at all beside one.

No? Wanna bet? I flew next to a tremendoid last year on a rather short flight (thank God) from HPN to ATL. On an Embraer 170. I stopped breathing around FL 130.

A380 seats (at least in Qantas aircraft) are very nice. So nice that I slept from Melbourne to nearly LA non stop
and although I can sleep on aircraft, that was unusual for me.

Other aircraft, well, they leave a lot to be desired.

Jet Star - says it all really. Flew with them once as it was the only reasonable connecting flight back to Perth. Never again.
