Street View on the Southern North Sea Cygnus Gas Platform

#1 Post by CharlieOneSix » Mon Aug 13, 2018 9:23 am

If you've ever wondered what life was like on a North Sea Oil or Gas Platform then take a Google Street View look around the Cygnus Gas Platform in the Southern North Sea. It's a rather more modern platform that the ones I used to be occasionally based on in the Northern North Sea back in the 70's - late 90's with the Cygnus having only come on stream in December 2016 - rather luxurious accommodation and leisure facilities by comparison!!

It is the largest single producing gas field in the UK, typically exporting 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.

Definitely a world apart from the 'old' platforms I visited regularly back in the 70's and 80's. During installation there would be stacked 8-man portacabins for accommodation for the 'bears, 4 man cabins at either end with shared toilet/shower facilities in the centre. Certainly not salubrious. Also 15 hour days were the norm for two week shifts, though the working days could be longer at times. Once did 3 successive 20 hour days AND was paid 20% offshore bonus. Made a tidy sum on that job!
