Overheating

#1 Post by OFSO » Fri Dec 07, 2018 4:25 pm

For the past few months my core utility has been flashing up overheating warnings for my CPU. Putting my hand near the fans, the air felt cold and as the warnings went away I ignored it. (Default Option). Until today, when various parts of OS X flashed up no-go warnings. Took the side off, fan turning as normal, everything felt cold...and then I saw. A thick sticky grey mass of cruddy dirt covering (and insulating) the heat sink blades under the fan. No wonder the air wasn't carrying any heat away. A good swish around with the brush that came with my electric razor, a suck from our Mr Henry, reloaded the utility and it all came on with none of the cores over 30°. The fan must be turning much more slowly as the whole hybrid shebang is a lot quieter now.

This is just the accumulated 'deletions' - whenever you delete text it has to go somewhere . . .

In the same room is a 7Kw woodstove which is lit for six months of the year. We breathe the same air that cools the CPUs. They are easy to clean, but our lungs ?

The problem here is usually a build-up of dog fur around critical points in the airflow. I do use the vac to extract stuff occasionally, although you do have to be careful with them because it's possible to get a static build-up which you don't want to discharge to sensitive bits of electronics.

I tape Scotch Brute pads over the air intake vents at the back of my machines which live under the desk in the study. Periodically take them off, wash and re tape.

Opened up my laptop, looked OK, the filter looked fine, then realised it was a quarter inch mat of dust.

Bad design as the intake sucked up any dust an fluff from furniture etc.
