PC Laptop Start-up password now req'd.
Re: PC Laptop Start-up password now req'd.
Quite - few of us would really like easy access to our computers for any casual passing hobbit. I have little doubt, however, that some of those present here probably consider the idea of computer security to be a total invasion of human rights and discriminatory (not forgetting 'woke' or 'leftie' or 'commie' etc etc) .

Yes.ExSP - you need to be an administrator (qv), I think, to change that setting - are you?
Re: PC Laptop Start-up password now req'd.
Are you running 'Command Prompt' elevated?

Now ... the computer has opened up as previously described, i.e. demanding a password, but with the note that the wrong password has been entered, try again. No it hasn't, nothing had been entered at that stage. So far this has only happened once, i.e this time, so I guess I can have one more shut down and re-start, but next day will be the third time, and .......... well, you know.
VERY tempted to throw the whole thing away and go Apple, but having seen the result of Mrs. ExS moving to an iMac, I doubt I'll go that route, yet.

I have an original disk for WIN98 I can send you...... Seriously I'd try Linux Mint. Very Windows-like, except it's free, it works, no updates, and few virus.
Re: PC Laptop Start-up password now req'd.
When you ask for 'Command Prompt' (whichever way you do it) there will be an option to 'Run as Administrator'. I obviously have no idea how your machine is set up but you may NOT be the true system 'administrator' - you can look at this issue via a search engine. To make major system changes like passwords you need to be thus. Again a S E will tell you how to set this up.EXSP wrote:No idea ! Wots that ?
Stupid question! No - it's when you have to operate your PC standing up - at any altitude. Causing a problem in single-seat military stuff like the F35.llondel wrote:Isn't that like logging on at cruise altitude?

Resigned to having to enter the password every time, not the end of the World but irritating. Not a fan of the digital World. All Harold Wilsons fault, when he proclaimed the transistor chip " The white hot heat of technology "
Thank you all for the advice and consideration.

Re: PC Laptop Start-up password now req'd.
ExSp, mine also reports wrong password as you say. That is simply because it is running a start up routine that didn't pause at the password entry screen.
My beef is MS continual suppressed Google in favour of its own superior search engine.

M$ do not 'continual suppressed' Google - that is nonsense. They are simply 'promoting' Bing. It is easily changed.
