Yup. That was the problem - a non-standard Android setup. 8-|
It isn't Android! It is a clone.
Yeah, well, I'm back to Samsung anyway.

Samsung mobiles have good specs but they are more expensive than an equivalent Xiaomi while Huawei never impressed me even before the non-standard OS issue.

I have a dilemma - I have been very pleased with my 'Honor' mobile (a Huawei offshoot), but do not want to further the Chinese economy when I replace it.

I had the same thought. Unfortunately Samsung is significantly more expensive for similar characteristics. Obviously Alcatel has some great phones but they are a bit "soulless" if I may put it that way - decent phones but not exciting.

Sadly, many phones are made in China, even for brands not associated with the place. I currently use Moto phones even though Lenovo bought them a few years ago.

llondel, I feel it is quite different to be "made in" China and to bought by a Chinese company

The big problem is the loss of 'Google' and its apps on any phone that is decided to be 'made in China'

If I am not mistaken Xiaomi still offers a Google store and I have heard recently than the new POTUS has removed Huawei from the naughty box. And POCO is a subsidiary of Xiaomi offering some very reasonably priced devices...

Thanks - will look into that. If Huawei (and presumably Honor) are 'off the list' that only leaves the 'moral' dilemma....

Xiaomi 13/3/21 - "US bans Americans from investing in Xiaomi, citing ties to Chinese military"

Poco - some Poco phones are rebranded Xiaomi devices

It isn't easy!

After my Huawei was stolen last year I bought a Xiaomi Redmi 8. Two big plusses. A 48hr battery life, and 72Gb ((useable)) internal memory. One big minus: no 'messages waiting' LED.

OFSO, I have the 4X one unfortunately one with 32 Gb (one of those mistakes when 50 € would have been well spent to buy the double capacity). I went through the menu and under the system setting - additional setting I think you can adjust / create a message waiting LED.

But there's no physical LED on the phone. If it's laid on the front you can see the flashlight for i/c calls. All of my communications are done by What's App., so no use.

Isn't there a blue one on top left one that doubles as charging indicator?

I get a tone when a WA arrives but I do miss the LED. My phone unlocks when I reach for it as it senses the MiFi band being near, but the screen stays off until I hit the button. I don't care for apps that open while the phone is in my pocket - leads to all sorts of problems.

How do you think the flashing 'message' LED used to work? You were presumably happy with that.

No, you are wrong. The LED indicator did not open or unlock the phone screen.

The problem with certain Apps, such as those displaying a popup, is that with the screen activated, inadvertant pressure on the screen in the pocket can trigger all sorts of unwanted things happening.

As you wish. Go without.
