Has anyone else experienced the 'delights' of W11? I have recently acquired 2 'refurbished' HP laptops for myself and Mrs, and the first came with 11 'installed' (and working) although it does not technically meet the M$ spec for 11. I am wondering whether to attempt a 'forced' upgrade to 11 on the second machine (which is for SWIMBO).

Researching the 11 'saga' I find it is widely said to be a mess, and it certainly does little 10 cannot do (but with more difficulty :)) ). I also hear that updates to 11 will be sporadic and, heavens help us, M$ is now suggesting 2024 for W12!!!

I think I will leave her machine on 10 and possibly revert mine to 10. Any views?

Switch to Linux now.
Windows has lost all propulsion and will soon be dead in the water.
The sooner you switch, the easier it will be.

My new work laptop has W11 on it. My personal laptop with W10 says quite clearly it isn't good enough for W11, although last time I used that one I had it booted with a Linux liveCD so I didn't really care which version of Windows was on it. Once W10 fades into the past I guess I'll put Linux on it permanently.

As for W11, it has a few annoying features that mean that things that used to be on top-level menus are now buried several deep. at least until you figure out which settings to change.

I bought a new desktop computer load with Win 11. Comeback Win XP. I can't find anything in Win 11.....Garbage.

Rib - have you got 'Classic Shell' on it for the start menu? It certainly improves it.

" Start menu "? I have a blank page with a couple of icons on it.

+1 for Classic Shell. I have it on my new Windows 11 PC and and on Mrs C16's Windows 10 PC.

Even Win 98. If it wasn't broke, why did they fix it ? Resisting Win 11 until forced to. Even got used to Win (H)ate until Win 10 came with a new laptop.

Win98 was broken, it was still basically a DOS shell. Window 2000 is about where they got it together, NT kernel and USB support in the same place.

Sadly many bits and pieces no longer work with XP (which I have on Big Computer). 7 is a mess and always wad. I am satisfied with 10, which is on my refurbished Elitebook HP from Morgans. IF IT WORKS LEAVE IT ALONE.

Linux Mint is OK.

Maybe. But I use a lot of M$haft Publisher, and no-one seems to have produced a program with the same functionality. None of the OpenOffice derivatives has one. Unless the folk on here know better, of course...

Scribus is the one people seem to think is a good Linux alternative to Publisher. I haven't tried it so I have no idea if this is true.
