Windows10 screen 'sleep'

#1 Post by Boac » Sun Jul 15, 2018 2:54 pm

Since a few of the wonderful M$ 'updates', my screen does not now go to 'sleep' unless I unplug my usb mouse. I have jiggered with all the power settings for USB + mouse etc to no avail and it is the same in a USB2 or 3 port. Anyone know a way to sort this?

Type Change when the PC sleeps into the search bar<<Type here to Search>> on the bottom left hand part of the screen next to the Windows button.

Select the Change when... option and you should see the following screen.

Change to the settings as you want and confirm that the screen sleeps at your command! ;)))

Check this out!

Or try another mouse, if no joy, then reload the USB driver. It is obviously spuriously activating the screen. ;;)

If that doesn't work I can suggest some BIOS settings that might work for you!

why did I get involved? =))

Appreciate the inputs, Caco, but none working including un-install/re-install mouse. Don't have another moosy to hand, but from gaggle it appears to be an 'M$ issue'. Interested in the BIOS ideas, though!

BOAC

I have a HP I3 laptop, that has the dreaded Win 10, I also have a Genius cordless mouse connnected via USB dongle, and it is working fine with the latest updates of Win 10.

So it doesn't that there is an inherant problem with Win 10.

Thanks, Ian - mine is a 'trad' wired mouse on an HP Probook. I do not have the problem with a USB wireless mouse.

As I said, I do not appear to be alone.

Boac if you have tried with a different mouse (they are very cheap and can be delivered by Amazon within a day ;))) ) and failing that, all the options via the control panel and the settings menu and tried re-installing your USB driver, to no avail, then it is time to look at the BIOS. Before fiddling with that it is well worth ensuring you know what version of the HP BIOS you are using.

Turn on or restart the computer.

While the display is blank, press the f10 key to enter the BIOS settings menu and confirm the BIOS type and date etc.

Post that here and I will look to see what might be applicable to this problem domain.

Given that you are a man of your calibre I won't patronise you with comments about the potential for unwanted or unintentional changes to royally screw up your PC's operation! o:-)

I would check the Auto Suspend Timeout settings first.

You could of course also stop the mouse from waking the screen from sleep mode.

Press Windows Key + X and select Device Manager from the list. When Device Manager opens, navigate to Mouse section, locate your mouse and double click it. Go to Power Management tab and uncheck Allow this device to wake the computer. If this cures the initial symptom then you will need to wake the PC with your keyboard before using the mouse. Sub-optimal but a clue as to what the problem might be.

The only wired mice I used, I put into the mousehole socket.

I advance to cordless without using USB connected mice.

Caco/Ian - all the above already tried to no avail. I am away from home at present, but Mrs B has a wired mouse on her HP (identical) laptop which I will try on return.

Bios is 68RTU F.68 7/13/2017 and is, I think, the latest.

New wireless mouse arrived from Amazon and all functioning normally now (as much as Win10 ever does...........)

Bizarrely in the same delivery a box of 6 mouse-traps I ordered! I have left one by the computer, baited and set, just in case. :))
