Windows10 1809 Update/HP Laptops

#1 Post by Boac » Wed Oct 03, 2018 8:33 pm

BEWARE: This update 'removes' the Broadcom 802.11 network adapter as it 'will not run on this version'. Thus you have no network. No pickup yet from HP.

Had to 'wind back' 2 HP laptops to retain networking. The other thing the 12 yr-olds at M$ did was reset my keyboard to US. Why?

The Reg has been giving a lot of publicity to the consequences of this month's update, and the (complicated) ways of solving the negative ones.

Yes - a complete shambles. Luckily I don't think!! I lost any files on the desktop which did accept the 'upgrade' with no obvious major issues. Knocked out network settings and reset my KB to US is all I have noticed.

Who are these morons at M$?

Many many reports of files 'lost' in this update. The schoolkids at M$ have now withdrawn the update from circulation. 'Tis said M$ knew about the issues well before release following beta testing.

I have now re-wound my desktop as well just in case.

I have a HP laptop with W10 installed.
I have recently lost the spellchecker within my Opera browser - despite it being 'instructed' within the Settings.

I really have no idea how to restore the spellchecker.

Redmond has cancelled rollout of the October update to WIN10 four days after it started. They say if you have problems call Microsoft or take your PC to the nearest Microsoft store where they will attempt to recover your lost files. Meanwhile XP and 7 soldier on, fenced in by antivirus and protected from the biggest threat of all: Microsoft updates.

Win/7 still gets updates.

1809 will simply not install on my Dell laptop. Microsoft gets nil points for this foul abomination of a build. They really are poor developers and testers.

Caco - unless it has now been 're-released' by M$ do NOT try to install it!

Good advice Boac.

Believe this software travesty made it onto my machine before M$ pulled it. I have cleared the update cache and history and changed my WIndows Update options pending further news.

The 'revised' version is now out for testing by the M$ affectionados. It is to be hoped this time M$ actually listen to their testing folk if/when they report 'issues'. I am going to exercise EXTREME caution this time before I install!

The really good news is that I haven't needed to switch my laptop on since this debacle happened.

I managed to get my W10 to not do automatic updates, just as I could do with XP. Looks like I'll leave it that way.

My original update was, as always, elective. I also do not allow 'automatics'.

The Register has an interesting analysis of what's gone wrong with Microsoft. Basically sacking all their staff who tested a new release, and instead now using their customers to debug. Their other problem is rushing to get a mandatory release out every six months whether needed or not. Mix well and stir in a pinch or two of arrogance....

It hadn't been given so much publicity but the current WIN7 business update has not exactly been without problems.

My Win7 computer auto updates the security database only. The rest I check carefully. Another thing they now do is BS you with what's in a KB. Anything with bland language now requires one to go search the techy forums to discover what nasty little tricks they are up to. I reject about a third of "Important" updates these days.

My (domestic) version of W10 doesn't allow me to refuse updates - only to delay them for 35 days, after which updates must be applied.

Certainly will!

The latest 'Cumulative Update' to 1803 (KB4467702) has happily knackerd my home network .....
