Network adapter issues - for the experts

#1 Post by Boac » Fri Nov 02, 2018 11:56 am

Gigabit mobo, powerline connection to Billion Router. Frequent loss of internet connection (and access to router via browser).

Router works with no issues on wifi. Windows 'troubleshoot' varies between 'No IP address'/Reset adapter (clears the problem sometimes) and DNS issues. Computer restart also sometimes fixes. Router restart has no effect. Laptop plugged into Powerline has similar problem.

Thus I have a problem with the powerlines or router. How to troubleshoot?

Is the first step to Cat 5 straight from router to PC to eliminate the Powerlines or is there a better step I should run?

Boac, which model Billion? I currently run a 7800VDOX. Using PPoE from my fibre termmination. Have been running Billions for the better part of the last fifteen years. So reasonably familiar with them.

You wrote "Frequent loss of internet connection (and access to router via browser)". If you can't connect to your router from your browser then you ain't going nowhere.

I would definitely run a cat 5 cable from PC to router. Checking connection to router directly via it's IP address - 192.168.1.254. If connection okay then suggest powerline devices playing up.

I'd start with a long Ethernet cable, the powerline stuff is a potential weak link depending on what noise is on your local mains cables.

Thanks folks - likewise a happy 'billionaire' for 10+ years. This one an 8800NL. 300 miles of Cat 5 now connected, and wondering how long to wait for an intermittent fault not to show - reminds me of "Is my indicator working" - "Yes" No" "Yes" :))

Appears to be running flawlessly (5 hours now) so two new adapters on their way to me tomorrow, coming by river. Will advise on progress.

In my last home i used Devolo powerline adaptors. Had one fail. Moved home and began rebuilding my network though being a smaller home needed less. Block walls and concrete floors however did have some effect. However I did have a wifi booster (not powerline) and plugged TV box into that.

Had difficulty in changing the Devolo security for Wi-Fi connection though they would work with cable. I then bought a Netgear wifi booster and it was neater and more reliable than powerline.

All sorted. 2 Connectors floated down the river. It was the original (Solwise) box at fault. It had fried.

Hello! I'm back! This time yet another Windows update appears to have scuppered my network.

T'was working fine after the above fun. Then a 'Feature update' to W10 1803 was loaded on all three machines Now I have 'issues'.

Prizes for staying with this!!

Network is 'Private'. Desktop ethernet into router via Powerline. 2 HP laptops on wireless. PC can be 'seen' and accessed by both laptops. PC can 'see' both laptops but not access shared drive. Windows Network Diagnostics cannot 'help'.

Here's the bit that stumps me - IF I access the laptop via FTP I can see the folders. I have worked through many 'solutions' on the web; as far as I can see, the network adapter settings are correct. I have actioned all the suggestions in services, ncpa.cpl, I can ping the laptop. I just get 80070035 "the network path was not found".

I do not know the derivation but it means "broken". Read it in a scfi novel. One of the fragments of useless knowledge that adhere to my brain cells as did crumbs of digestive biscuits to the evening mug of Ovaltine that Nanny used to bring me before bedtime and the ritual whipping.

Weird - downloaded the latest November 27, 2018—KB4467682 on all 3 machines and all the network issues have vanished like the morning mist!
