New Laser Printer - wow!

#1 Post by CharlieOneSix » Tue Nov 27, 2018 3:37 pm

My Epson inkjet printer finally gave up last week so now I have an multifunction HP Laserjet Pro M477fdw. HP were offering £100 cash back and increased the warranty from 1 to 3 years so it was a no-brainer. The double sided printing is superb but took a while to fathom out as the printer driver downloaded from HP's site said a duplexer wasn't installed. Other than sorting that the set up including wifi was a dream.

How times change - with cashback this printer was £223. In 1988 I had a part time Desktop Publishing Business with Ventura Publisher on a 286 computer and using a mono laser printer which cost me £3000. A separate mono flatbed scanner cost £900. The following year I went to the Desktop Publishing Show in Islington and one of the first colour laser printers was on demo there..... £15,000!!! :-o

I would say that the drop in price for the printers have gone much further than those for pc or laptops.

My needs are modest, couple of years back saw Sainsbury was selling an HP inkjet for the price of the ink. OK, the ink carts were probably very small as the profit is in the ink, but it used the same carts as the previous model so transferred the old ones over.

Remember my first inkjet was £500 - my 17 inch laptop two years ago was £200.

You pay top dollar for fast computer chips rather than the plastic, hard drive and screen.

Good choice. I have the slightly simpler & cheaper 277dw, now at the end of its third year, and aside from a wireless glitch caused by a router-update which I hadn't spotted, has been trouble-free.
Only reservation is colour photographs: I use a Canon inkjet for these, as the HP's quality isn't the tops.

With some models it’s actually cheaper to get a new printer when the ink runs out than get ink refills!

Agreed, not long ago one of our "convenience" stores was selling a basic, B & W laser printer for $25, and the refill was $90, so I bought 3 printers, have thrown 2 way already, so not sure where to go next, but doubtless something will be around when I need to. Gave up colour years ago, go to a local provider when I need anything.

I had one Epson printer in a series of HPs. Unlike the HP, the Epson ink dried out between trips to Spain. The HP ink always remains fluid. For me, no contest. HP every time.

Over the years I've had IBM, Epson, HP and Cannon ink-jet printers. The best has been my current Cannon MX924, with ink from Indian re-furbished cartridges.

I think it is worth buying a laser jet and spare all the concerns about the ink drying. I did and I am happy with the result.

I have a Canon in London, cost £25, less a £5 voucher, from Robert Dyas. Works well but very noisy. Still, for twenty quid...
