Today I received a discourse from a friend in the USA, not written by himself as a word document, but an "internet thing" that he had just forwarded.
I read it normally on my iPad, but was then called by Mrs. ExS to ... come look at this, on her iMac computer, and then I discovered also on my PC.
the
text
was
in
a
vertical
line
down
the
middle
of
the
page
like
this.
Nothing we have discovered will change it to a normal, readable format again.
WTF ?
P.s. I wrote it here down the middle of the page, as we had received it, but this application has shifted what I wrote to the left hand margin.
Document format.

Re: Document format.
Solution is probably to cut and paste it into a word document and then clear or remove formatting.
Re: Document format.
Yep. The formats from previous 'puters can be really annoying. Sometimes copying for a second time, and 'remove all formatting' does the trick. Or 'Save as' something different from the current one, and 'remove all formatting', etc...
Re: Document format.
I still use Word 2003 on me old XP (all tweaked the way I like it so can't be buggered upgrading, if any) but save in PDF if it has to be emailed or 'sapped to anyone. Comes out the other end ok.

Re: Document format.
I frequently receive documents that my augmented XP PC can't open but my smartphone can, and not only that but my smartphone can reformat them as .pdf or .rtf and send* them to my PC in openable form.
