Move from Win/7 to Win/10

#1 Post by ian16th » Wed Feb 20, 2019 10:47 am

I've just had to repair/upgrade my desktop, with a new motherboard and modern I5 6 core cpu.

This has necessitated migrating to Win/10 ~X(

Now I am a longtime Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird user that doesn't like change!

I managed to move my Thunderbird Profile successfully, but what I thought was going to be the easy part, Firefox and its Bookmarks is proving to be trickier.

The appearance/layout of Firefox is also different and I cannot work out how to change it!

Has anyone done this migration?

I was very happy with Win/7, but my new h/w requires Win/10.

ian - the move to W10 should not change Firefox. I assume you must have somehow downloaded an updated FF version? I suggest you download an earlier FF version and install?

Regarding XP/10, the 'usual' caveats apply regarding 'updates' and the 'security' side of your time on the internet. I believe XP is no longer supported by MS so yes, while it is a good OS, it is not recommended unless you are going to only work off-line.

I dread when my comp packs in.I have been using XP for years. The OS is so old that I don't get virus attacks or spam emails etc.I will investigate whether I can get a new comp built by someone geeky and have XP installed as the OS.

My recent move to W10 resulted in me losing my Firefox add-ons (ReminderFox).
I spent a couple of months 'guessing' my appointments - I now use the Outlook Calendar.

I second the motion you go to XP Ian if you can.

I have 2 laptop puters - one's a huge MF which already had W10 installed but no option for XP or W7. I only use it for work-related crap.

The other is a smaller HP with XP and once used as an emergency lap for the Dell. The Dell died coupla months ago in a rabid fury of sparks so have been using it ever since. Its sole purpose is for everything other than work.

Apsara migrated W7 - W10 on her desktop. I watched her - pure rocket science. Her IQ is off the planet and even she got so pissed off and confused with 10's ***** she went back to 7 (another battle in itself I might add).

I'm sure one of our computer experts will correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think ANY computer 'demands' Win10. I think you can install whatever WIN you like on any machine other than a Mac. The main problem is finding XP drivers.

I assume ian has a machine with an OEM copy of Win10 on, so he will need to uninstall that before going to 95/98/7/2000/Vista/XP - or dual boot.

Slasher - what do you mean "no option for XP or W7"? - there will not be one unless you install them! You need to put the 'old' version on first, of course, and then re-install 10.

I cannot honestly remember what version of Firefox I was on.
But I have my old Win/7 boot disk installed in the case as a none boot disk, and I installed the latest version of Firefox I had in my old 'Downloads' directory
.

I use the 'Lightning' add-on for Thunderbird and have migrated it successfully.

I have now learned that my new motherboard consumes more power than the previous one.

To the extent that I cannot run the m/c with 1 x SSD, 3 x Hdd and 2 x DVD recorders from a 530w power supply.

1 of DVD's is now unplugged.

On one system I also use XP, strongly protected with two Antivirus scans a day and a nightly scrub with CC. The internet connection is 4G via a Huawei Telefonica box. I am extremely circumspect where I go on the net and don't even open friends' cute cat videos they send me.

The other system is WIN7, also fed a diet of 4G by a Huawei Relish box. Relish will become Three on April 1st.

I loathe 7, love XP, which on a split 500g hard drive and 200g SSD is blisteringly fast and completely sorted with all my ancient hardware.

If your critical apps are email and browsing, then I would use Linux. In my opinion, the most user friendly and polished desktop version is Mint but there are many other distributions or flavours available. Look at http://distrowatch.org/ for others. Mint comes with Thunderbird and Firefox already installed.

Agree. Mint lives on yet another drive in my XP box and fires up if XP fails to load, or is supposed to. I used Mint for a few months and found it excellent, but 'as a dog returnith to its vomit, so a fool returnith to his folly' and went back to Microsoft's Finest.

I agree - Linux is excellent but the problem is the vast difference in available software. Over the years I have accumulated various Windows programmes that just 'do the biz' for a particular task, and they nearly always are not available in Linux.

As izod says.

Yes, windows specific applications can be an incentive to continue to use the MS OS. In my case, I have 3 such applications which I use occasionally. However, I run them on a Win 7 32 bit virtual machine inside VirtualBox running on top of Linux. I also have VMs of DOS 6.2 with WordPerfect and Lotus 123, WFWG, Win95, XP and WinNT which I use occasionally to show people how user desktops and applications have evolved over the years. Grandson was flabbergasted at the user unfriendliness of WordPerfect.

WTF are you all talking about ? Due to a computer fail I ended up with Win H'eight, but have learned to love it after Vista, forced on to me after another computer, loaded with HP, also failed. I use Office 2007, and Word 97,and Outlook. Not broke so I haven't fixed it. I might wait until Win 20 ( if I live long enough )

Mrs. ExS. has recently moved to Apple from Win 7. Big mistake, boody great machine sitting on the desk ( akcherly only a 30" monitor, everything else built in to it apart from a loose, Bluetoothed, keyboard that needs charging, apparently, it stopped working yesterday - Not Many People Know That ) that does PRECISELY what it wants to do and is slowly driving her mad.

I meant there was no shop option Boac. I've long lost my XP setup disk (I think it was lent out yonks ago) but tried installing Apsara's W7 on it but it was an absolute mess even with a guru's help. As mentioned I only use the 10 laptop for work only.

Why not?

Many other sources "are available". If you are not going onto the internet with it (you wouldn't, would you!) you do not need a licence key.
