HELP

#1 Post by PHXPhlyer » Tue Jul 02, 2019 6:02 pm

I have begun seeing both trusted websites and content with double underlined words that when hovered over bring up pop-up boxes (ad related to underlined words). At the same time opening content opens up a new tab with ads. I'm thinking this is due to mal-ware or a virus. I am using adblocker and adblocker plus , but that doesn't seem to work on this problem.
Any ideas on removal or software to help with this.

Thanks,
PP

After this was posted the words software and virus showed up in the post as double-underlined.

You have some sort of Computer 'infection', PHX - not a panic, I think, but worth eliminating, and probably what is known as a 'Potentially Unwanted Program' (PUP), often trying to get you to visit (and buy from) some ad site or other.

First question:
What do you use for Anti-virus?

Second:
When did you last do a scan for 'nasties'?

Third:
What is your Computer operating system?

Fourth:
What is your browser?

Fifth:
How often do you update your Computer?

The above has brought back memories - I used to have a 'program' that would scan my computer and list the 'PUPs' (I never knew what PUP stood for, only that they were unwanted).
Nowadays (W10) I let M$ take care of this - what do you recommend?
I use Opera.

PP - try running the free version of Malwarebytes. I run the paid for version which has saved my bacon a couple of times or more. It caught me out however when in amongst a list of PUPS it had a file from O&O SafeErase. I deleted the lot and it took me ages to find out why SafeErase would not run.

EDIT: Ah, having just looked at it I see the suggested remedy in Pontius Navigator's post recommends using Malwarebytes......

Malwarebytes is also my saviour. Normally these days you get a free 7 day trial of the realtime scanning Full Monty with each new update of the free version.

Thanks all.

Used PN's link and finally got Zemana Anti-malware to download and install. It found the offender and got rid of it. Don't know how it got by security software (McAfee).

Thanks Fox.
Do you happen to have a source for McAfee assistants and accessories to aid with the uninstall?

I also use Malwarebytes on my Win 7 Pro machine. Personal opinion: it's the best there is.

Never heard of Zemana Anti-malware so cannot comment. Your answer to "Don't know how it got by security software (McAfee).2 is, unfortunately, self-explanatory :))

Not many answers in your reply, so good luck!
