Win 10 Upgrade 1903

#1 Post by Pontius Navigator » Fri Aug 23, 2019 5:30 pm

Yesterday dire warning pop-up 'your Windows is out of date and will soon run out of support '.

'Start now or delay '.

Not busy so after threat of excommunication i said OK.

Eventually, you as would expect the update failed. I found it was waiting for another segment to update so it wouldn't. But since the other segment was frozen at 'installing ' I started to jump through innumerable hoops. 24 hours later still jumping.

Turns out the update was released in May but as they didn't want the whole world to crash at once they did it in stages.

It is now at 90% but at what stage and how long for?

'your Windows is out of date and will soon run out of support '.- is a very strange message to receive, and I wonder if it was a genuine Windows message. 1903 is only a 'feature' update to a running W10 installation.

If you were running W10 then 'support' will not 'run out' simply because you do not install a W10 update! What ARE you doing, PN ??!! How did you 'download' this 'update'? Did you click on a link with the message?

It is genuine, what it means is that you will no longer get security fixes unless the base OS is certain build because they won't be producing them any more. Support in this context is 'future updates' of any flavour.

BOAC, what was correct was the 'dire' bit. Llondel is correct too.

Finally, after 4 goes, including a power failure overnight, it got installed. Looked different. Pressed Start. Totally different. I use Classic Shell. Clicked CS to update and got a big Red warning that it wouldn't install. Bugger.

Opened the internet and once again MS suppressed Google and inserted Bing.

Then, surprise, Classic Shell was back.

Classic Shell is pretty good at patching itself into new Windows builds, I use it too. Not had MS try to impose Bing on me via an upgrade yet though.

Sorry, PN - I didn't realise you were using an old version of W10. I assumed you would have been up-to-date! Out of interest, when did you last update W10?

I too have been impressed with Classic Shell and its capabilities.

BOAC, not an 'old ' version and fully up to date at 1803. It is the way MS does it.

Released in May but rolled out in tranches. Lots of issues cropped up in July. Only this week, 3 weeks on, did I get it.

Actually it makes sense. If you roll it out on day one to 700 million users and it crashes, you crash the World. Crash the first few million and it gives them the chance to fix the bugs. By the time I was f*cked up there was lots of online help.

I am still treading carefully. Not tried printing yet but I find my Wi-Fi is now very poor. Plugged in a LAN and that is better. Also not figure out how to kill Bing.

They have loaded a bunch of new Apps including a pay to connect Wi-Fi App. Who will pay MS for Wi-Fi? Barely used Apps before so will steadily check and delete.

Upgraded to 1903 last night - think it took well over 3 hours. It lost my screensaver and messed up Classic Shell. Still haven't managed to get the latter back to the way I like it but it all works. Only two more PC's to do....now to run the free O&O ShutUp10 privacy tool to see if the upgrade has changed my settings.

Classic Shell is odd. I get the Red Screen saying it wont update then, with no further action, it appears.

You have the same?

Sadly CS has gone open source and no longer supported. Advice seems to be uninstall and reinstall. Not plucked up the courage yet.

Step 1, make sure you have latest CS.

PN - I went to the classicshell.net website and downloaded 4.3.1 - I was on 4.3. It just seems to overwrite the previous version and works kind of okay. I've selected the Windows 7 Start Menu Style which I had previous to the 1903 update but it doesn't appear - just a light grey background instead of blue. Also I preferred the black taskbar but now it's just light grey and I haven't found how to change that yet.

I found 4.3.1 but it won't me run it.

I then used TweakNow2012 to get rid of bits and pieces including BING. It can also change task bar transparency.

My second PC updated to 1903 faultlessly and Classic Shell kept all its settings plus my screensaver didn’t get altered. I shall never understand Windows.

It is however a basic computer for my weather station and took 8 hours 10 minutes from start to finish! Mrs C16’s PC update is a job for tomorrow.

The latest Win update allows for synchronization between Windows and Android. Gave it a try.

Big mistake.

I used to have an MS phone, forgot why I got rid of it.

The new Windows has a feature that sorts lists into recent, last week etc. Fine if you like that process. A bit like in an office.

Your PA arrives early Monday. Takes all last week's documents and puts them in the lower drawer. All recent get moved down a drawer. Now where is that file you were working on the week last Monday?

Uninstalled and it left the wall paper behind.

It couldn't sell mobiles now it's trying to take over Android.

One of the biggest gripes I have is that every MS update of 10 seems to upset my home network.

Thank you for confirming that. At least my Win 10 laptop. Wi-Fi dependent programs were slow to load. Connected a LAN cable and it works fine.

Might try Google see if it is a common problem. Very comforting when you discover you're not alone.

PN - if that was for me, by 'Home Network' I mean 2 Laptops and a PC, not the wireless network. That does not appear to be affected by updates.

OK. However I found this:
https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.driv ... ernet/amp/

So will try when I have a quiet cool hour or 3.

Try googling your problem, you never know.

I largely solve the problem by running Linux. My work PC connects to my home network when I'm working from home but doesn't need to interact with it apart from the printer, and I have another laptop that rarely gets turned on which also runs Win10. That has a Linux virtual machine on it and that's what I use when I need to move something to/from other places on my home network.
