What is it?

#1 Post by Pontius Navigator » Sun Nov 17, 2019 9:48 am

I have installed a burglar alarm system. I still have to mount the alarm box and have the appropriate assortment of screws and plugs. I also have two little pieces of electronics. Their purpose has not jumped out at me from the installation manual. Before I ask the supplier it would be good to know what they are.

Sorry, no picture, but I think they as capacitors or diodes, but are they?

They have a wire about 20mm protruding from each end. They are about 5-6mm long, buff coloured, and have 3 red rings. Can some kind soul suggest what they are?

PN.Possibly spares.Capacitors have a habit of burning out.I had one go on the washing machine.I found one on the net for £2-50 and repaired the machine.

Sounds like 2.2k 20% tolerance 1/4 watt three band resistors - but I have no good idea why they might be included in your kit!!

SImilar things...different values....

That would push my technical competence. They are exactly the same as the resistors shown above but just 3 red bands. When I come to mount the panel I will have a look at the PCB.

They are 2.2 K ohm resistors.

Explained here.

Look up 'end of line resitors' on alarm systems.
There are many explanations - though whether you will feel any the wiser after reading them is quite another matter! #-o

I will look at the PCB but really wanted to have a name for when I call tech support.

Johngreen has it.
Terminal resistors
They go at the end of the line, which one depending on it's length.
It's all here, including a video
https://www.alarmsystemstore.com/pages/ ... -resistors
If you get stuck, pm me the details of your system and I'll tell you what you need (maybe tomorrow, I'm very busy today).

Fox, ty, no problem at the moment as just installing it. It is Visonics PowerMaster 10 GTX. I may come back when it get to the UK module. 😀

The resistors are used in the magnetic detector hardwired circuit only, Zone 29. That would be your window/door open magnetic detectors. They are added at the box connection, arrangement depending on your configuration, in order to ensure a maximum resistance of 2.2k Ohms on the line itself in normal state. The connection arrangements are in Fig 3.2 on page 6 of this guide. No soldering required.

Thank you, good spot. My system is all wireless. As for door contacts that is going to be a problem. I have one contact supplied and 5 doors. As 4 doors will be covered by the motion sensors I plan to try and fit it to the garage personnel door. My problem is all the doors have fancy architrave and door profiles. I will have to try and build up the door and edge to provide a plane surface.

You may be able to use a little low expansion foam and a light wood (thin ply) former mould to fill the trim profile and flatten the surface, since there is little mechanical strength required.

The version I quoted, was vintage 1952 No 2 Radio School, RAF Yatesbury.

Sex and violence, you can't beat it ;)))
Mnemonics are a good way to remember lists, and I used to encourage the students to develop their own, especially as most in existence mean nothing to modern kids.
I recommended that the most memorable tended to be funny, silly, or rude. When the students had come up with them, usually for prep, they would expound them to the class. For the rude ones, I would step out of the class.
On my very last day of teaching, at an all girls school, several of my students, feeling very pleased that they had remembered everything for their GCSEs by the use of mnemonics, insisted on telling me what they had thought up. Given that several of them were emigrating also, I allowed them to. Let's just say they were well up to Ian16th's standards.

Not many things my father said were amusing but I still remember what he said was the mnemonic for take off checks when he went through flying training on the Miles Magister in 1942: tmpffs...tickle my prick for **** sake.
The helicopter pilots' mantra: If it hasn't gone wrong then it's just about to...

Our geography master gave us a mnemonic, silly certainly, but essential for a country analysis essay:

Perhaps six sausages could possibly occupy the chip sauce pan.
