OS X El Capitan?

#1 Post by Magnus » Wed Oct 28, 2015 11:40 am

Is it worth the switch from OS X? I saw some poor reviews of Yosemite, so didn't instal that, but El Capitan seems to be better received.

Thanks for all and any advice.

MagnusP:

DON'T DO IT. Although I am one of those so-called Apple fanboys and have a plethora of iDevices including the new iMac. (I probably have more iDevices than Apple does but that's a different story!)
In my experience, El Capitan has slowed down the wife's iMac Mini, my iMac Mini and my iMac as well. All three machines show a demonstrable slowdown in performance. (Yet Apple touts El Capitan as increasing performance. I have to wonder how much glue Apple's engineers were sniffing to make such an absurd statement.)

Having said that, I also have a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air both of which do not have spinning hard drives but SSD's. Both of these machines have not shown a hit on performance but that's kind of difficult to do with a machine running off an SSD.

Then again, YMMV. You can always install El Capitan and if you don't like it fall back to a previous version.

Thanks, RGB. I have the 27" iMac with a 1 TB hard drive. When I have some free time, I'll give El Capitan a try and revert if need be to OS X.

Is that 1TB hard drive a Fusion drive?

Well I bought a new MacBook Pro Retina thingy the other day and used my Defence Discount card which saved £180.00.

Running El Capitan. I have had OS X from Leopard upwards and think this is fine. The only thing I don't like (much) is the name, I would have preferred 'Furry Pussy' but Apple refused and called it after a mountain . . . go figure.

No issues at all with El Capitan (noduff).

Each to his (or her) own . . . Since I'm retired, I don't have to shave every day anyway . . .
