Sticky mouse
Sticky mouse
Wireless mouse not happy at the moment.
Plugged in back-up USB mouse. It works but scroll wheel is very hard to turn.
What can I use to lube it that won't mess up its innards?

Re: Sticky mouse
Can the mechanism of the mouse be exposed by disassembling the casing?
Re: Sticky mouse
Have you tried using a credit card to buy a new one?
Re: Sticky mouse
No screws.
Looks like it is glued together. Tried gently prying at the seam with no give.
I'm thinking electrical contact cleaner.
If it doesn't work there are plenty of mice at the thrift store for a dollar or so.
Don't know why the wireless one is unhappy. Checked the battteries, OK.
Have a BT one but can't find the dongle at the moment.

Re: Sticky mouse
WD40 will probably rectify the stickiness but cannot guarantee the longevity.
You could try plain water, but not knowing what the mechanism consists of there is a risk that it will kill it quicker.

Ah! In days when mice had balls, one could clean the rollers!

Wireless mouse now happy.
Fed it new AAAs even though the ones installed tested "Good".
Will probably try contact cleaner on USB one.
Like I said above: they are readily available for cheap and are a good back-up.

Re: Sticky mouse
Having watched online videos of people repairing mouse 'wheels' it seems likely that the problem is hair wrapped around the spindle, and unlikely that any action apart from removing the accumulation of hair will rectify the problem. So concentrate on seeing how to dissemble the rodent.
Re: Sticky mouse
I have to regularly disassemble the mice here to clean all the cat fur out of the innards. It wraps itself around the scroll wheel axle. Did it yesterday, in fact. The screws are usually hidden under the shiny pads, so carefully prise them up with something thin, take it to bits, clean up the innards and assembly is the reverse of disassembly. Then see if it still works.

Re: Sticky mouse
They are made in two halves, an upper which goes on top, and a lower, which doesn't. The two halves are clipped together by little 'fingers' on the top which lock into holes on the bottom just inside the join. Squeeze the top and it will pop open. No? Squeeze harder. Then check to see if there's a solitary screw under the manufacturers label. Remove and squeeze again. NB. Have family around poised to catch wheel, spring, microswitches, etc, as they leap out in all directions, and as has been said, funds to buy a new one in case you can't find everything. I buy my cordless mice from Carrefour at €9.95 each.

It is always a good idea to have a spare in good working order.

Re: Sticky mouse
Or have the mouse in a box or large plastic bag - shopping bag will do.
Who has disassembled a BMC manual gearbox and lost the bits that fly?
When handling this gear, be careful not to accidentally push the 1st gear ring off the central hub.
There are 3 spring-loaded ball bearings ready to launch into outer space if the gear ring is allowed to slide too far.
Re: Sticky mouse
Current wireless is branded Siig, from the late Fry's Electronics.
BT one is Gear Head. Just need to find my BT dongle.
USB one (with sticky scroll wheel ) is generic that ships with desktops.
Have several wireless mice around in various states of usability, that is if I can match the right dongle. They don't seem to be universal even though they work on 2.4 MH, I think.

Re: Cordless mouse & keyboard.
I use el-cheapo 'Genius', they last between 12-24 months. If Either give trouble just go and buy another set.

Cordless keyboard is MicroSoft that was part of a package. Probably 12-15 Y O and still going, Just replace batteries. Companion mouse packed it in long ago.
Current wireless mouse is of four button variety.

Re: Sticky mouse
They can't be interchangeable, otherwise there would be chaos if two people had the same brand of mouse within range of each other. They're coded to talk to a particular dongle. That's not true with Bluetooth mice, because they can be paired with different machines as needed.PHXPhlyer wrote: ↑Wed Mar 10, 2021 8:43 pmCurrent wireless is branded Siig, from the late Fry's Electronics.

I've never seen a mouse with blue teeth.
