Xiaomi

#1 Post by OFSO » Wed Jul 21, 2021 12:30 pm

Following the drowning of her old Huawei (which to be honest was suffering battery degredation) I bought the Mem' a new Redmi 8, because I have one and it's great. However times have moved on and hers is quite different (and better) to my 2020 model - in one year Xiaomi have made improvements such as a four lens camera with wide angle and macro, metallic blue gorilla glass front and back, big memory and two-day battery. Included are plastic case and screen protector. Got it home, looked around this household, set itself up. Same apps as old phone even though that one is drownded.

But what I can't understand is WTF Xiaomi are playing at. You might think they would be doing well to introduce 4, maybe 5 new models in the past twelve months. 7? 8? No. They have introduced 17 new models in the past year. Did I buy the best, the value-for-money phone? No idea. Brilliant company, way ahead of the Fruit in numbers of sales, but confused Marketing Dept.

What was the price?
I looked on Amazon...$225 for 128GB.
My 5 or so year old Samsung Galaxy 9+ cost several times that.

I paid €149 for my Xiaomi 8 last year (after theft of the Huawei) and €159 this week for the 2021 Xiaomi 8 with 64Gb. Best range of phones is at Carrefour. If one is lucky they have last year's on sale marked down, no such luck this week. However this year's model is worth the extra €10 IMHO.

I have no answer. I was given an iPhone which after comparing it to my then Android phone for 48 hours ended up in the municipal recycling bin.
But I suspect it would work.
I see that as ever years behind technology, Apple are finally switching to the C connector.

Should be fine. You will need to save all your contcats to your sim card in the Iphone and then import them into the Android.

It depends on the size of the card micro/nano sms. Few years back when the provider I use, offered a temporary phone when ones device was for repairs, I had an android phone and was offered an Iphone for the duration of repairs. I declined but it seems it would have been possible.

The 'Xiami will use a nano I expect. The Iphone sim will depend on 'age'.

Any phone store can "crop" a sim card if it is too large and they also have adapters to go from smaller to larger card.
I have done it both ways in the past.

Or you can get a card with various adapters in place to get the right size. Although the change procedure might be a bit difficult.

I've never seen a SIM card that needed trimming. They are all pre-punched/cut for three sizes. And with fingersmith dexterity one can even reassemble them to fit in an old phone. I must confess I'm now finding fitting two nano SIMs and a 64Gb memory card into the frame and pushing it in the slot a very fiddly bidiness, as is hunting them on the carpet when dropped.

Incidentally all my contacts came down the ether from Google and landed with a flutter of wings, so to speak, on the wife's phone. Everything else the new phone harvested from my phones and the Huawei Media pad, which turned on at the newcomers behest; except WotsAp and Revolut, which are unique.

I think the Mi Fit app needs a special invitation too ie needs to be downloaded to the new phone (speaking from a move from a 4X to a 9T last May).

You may need to cut an older card to fit on a smaller slot. BTW OFSO a friend was doing this card hunting game just this evening.

I didn't copy my MiFit to my wife's phone. Be asking for trouble, and likewise my WA, location, banking etc. Oh, and OpsNormal appeared on her phone, I took it off again!

You certainly don't want 'location' there, do you - otherwise she will find out about Gertie from number Thirty :)) :))

Xiaomi is now the number one phone in the sales lists in Europe, followed by Samsung. In the World, positions are reversed. In both categories, Apple is an also-run in third.

Update to the above sales report: Xiaomi is now world number one. Samsung second. The over-priced Fruit is third.

Arrived at the family house in London last week. All our Xiaomi phones logged onto the family WiFi. They didn't need to ask for a password despite never having been here before (both purchased since last visit). Only the wife's Kindle needed it. Must have got it from another device they talk to.
