VPN stuck on foreigh server

Just a snippet which may help someone else avoid the hours I've spent on this. I use Firetrust's Hideaway VPN occasionally. Although I don't recall doing so I must have connected to their French server a few days ago. I know I had turned the VPN off afterwards before I shut the PC down. Whilst the VPN continues to work normally I remained firmly stuck in France according to my IP address.
Solution - in Windows 10 at least - type "Proxy" in the search bar and in "Automatic proxy setup" untick "Automatically detect settings". I had never ticked it to "on" previously. Even though it says that these settings don't apply to VPN connections it has sorted things without detriment to anything else as far as I can tell and I am no longer wandering around in Ffrench cyberspace. Don't ask questions - I have no idea what it all means. I just kept deselecting things one at a time until this solution worked!
