Yes, pinky, you should disable the defrag. You wouldn't be doing your SSD any favors by not doing so.

rgbrock1; Roger. How do I do that? Remember that when it comes to computers in general, Ich bin ein dummkopf!! :D

BTW; As I'm still running Windows 7, is there any spyware on it than I should be aware of and if so, how do I get rid of that? I have noticed in the recent path when accessing a retail site that a pop up appeared saying that the store concerned wished to track my location.

Having done the free upgrade from 7 to 10 a couple of months ago and followed it by a clean install, today Windows Update downloaded Windows 10 Version 1511 Build 10586. I'd been having problems with some programs - Word, Paperport and Windows Explorer - hanging for a few seconds or up to a minute on occasions. This new version has got rid of all those problems. Coincidence maybe. Be warned though - it's just like doing the free upgrade all over again and just as time consuming....but in my case well worth it.

10586 is MS' latest, best new iteration.

I've had it on a couple of platforms for a week or so... It does seem to be an improvement 10565, but only marginally...

Not long out is an excellent programme from the Steve Gibson stable called 'Never10'. Well worth a look if you are 'bothered by the M$ nagging and the apparently increasing occurrence of the sneaky system upgrades to W10.

Simple to run and reversable.

No 2 son switched on his W7 laptop to find it was (very kindly) going to 'upgrade' him to W10. He manged to get an 8 hour 'deferment' which gave him time to use 'Never10' and all is now peace!

Quit being scared of 10... It has a couple of "cosmetic" issues but I've been using it for almost 18 months since the early pre-releases. It's stable, solid and, like it or not, it's the future of the majority of the future of computing.

As I have said before, I don't have issues with 10, just the despicable way M$ are forcing it on people who should have the option to stay where they are.

Then surely you object to Apple's authoritarian attitude over IOS which is done for exactly the same reason - to save on costs for support of multiple operating systems.

As part of the forthcoming (next month ?) update to WIN 10, Cortana will be set to on as default, even while the lock screen is in effect. The idea of having the microphone permanently enabled and connected even while your laptop is "off" is "for your convenience" so you can talk to it and "set appointments and add reminders" according to MS. (Source: "Computer Active" 11-24 May 2016).

OK you people of many brain cells. I do not have the internet access to search this. I have just installed '10' from a file copied onto my laptop from our computer chappie. All seems OK apart from the screen. The icons are slightly fuzzy and in browser the presentation seems slightly squashed. I suspect it is not set up for my size or dimensions of screen? Any suggestions?

Right click on the desktop, Display Settings, Advanced display settings (not obvious: at the bottom of the window), select the right resolution in the drop-down box.

19down, many thanks. We will bang on the generator shortly and give it a bash. Will report back.

Still haven't managed to sort out the screen.

I sent an e-mail to three people last week bcc and to myself cc. I got it they didn't. Any ideas?

With time running out on the freebie, I backed up and sys imaged my laptop (Win7) and bit the bullet today with W10.

So far absolutely no problems, a bit of 'cosmetics' to be done but everything works just fine.

Re: Windows 10 - here comes the subscription !

Computer Advisor Issue 480:

A hidden file found in a preview copy of the WIN 10 upgrade out on August 2nd called "Windows Upgrade to Subscription Tool" reveals plans by Microsoft to charge a subscription to users of WIN 10. There is also an associated Registry Change called "Allow Windows Subscription". When challenged about this, Microsoft claim the subscription to be applied to WIN 10 applies only to business users.
