Deep soak test on laptop

#1 Post by jimtherev » Mon May 09, 2022 4:24 pm

I have a fairly-new HP lappy here, property of my daughter, which has been randomly crashing (Lappy, not daughter).
I've now done the traditional stuff, updated windows & ms office, had the back off, removed the ssd and the memory, cleaned the contacts, and carefully reseated 'em.

I think it *might* have done the trick, but you never know until it crashes again... all you can say for now is 'it ain't crashed yet.'

So, the next thing is to put it on a test, doing fairly intensive work over, say, a 36-hour period, getting warm and so on. Are there any test programs out there I could use?

jim - I would just run it 'normally' and see, but if you want to test it have a look at what https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/reviews ... ,5461.html says and note its warning!

What you have done seems to be enough to me. I always advocate a CPU amonitoring programme since overheat is a common cause of crashing.

When Jobs et al started Apple, it was usual to allow one's new computer to fall a few inches onto a hard surface to seat the chips.

Have you looked at the fan and associated grill work?

Yup. Clean as a whistle. (Unlike my 'tower' under the desk which fluff-gathers at an alarming rate.)
