My old printer and new second - hand laptop.

#1 Post by OFSO » Thu Aug 25, 2022 12:19 pm

To now I've been very happy with my second-hand Elitebook from HP. Everything I've plugged in has been detected and installed. However I plugged in my HP Photosmart printer today and and WIN10 tells me there is no driver available.
The HP web site is of course a nightmare to negotiate and the various Indy people offering Drivers look dodgy. Before I pop out and buy a new WIN10 printer, has anyone overcome this problem?

Yes, but firstly no CD drive on the new laptop, and secondly no driver for WIN10 on the disc. I have noticed fewer and few cartridges for my ancient printer so I guess time for a new one. They are very cheap.

USB CD/DVD drives are small and cheap.
I used to carry one around with my netbook to watch DVDs before streaming was a thing.

It's the media not the storage. Every time I try to download the driver all HP has on their website is videos of HOW to download. There's another site with HP drivers but Malwarebytes warns me off it.

I plugged in a old Epson printer that I used on a Win XP comp, into my new Dell Win 11 comp. The comp picked it up no problem and it worked right away. Having used XP for so many years I find Win 11 mindblowing. As yet I can,t figure out where I find the ink levels for the printer.

I thought you ran a linux mint machine.

Windows is such a pain, they could make it work, but they can't bothered.

I use windows for a program (surveileince program) which I haven't, yet, found a way to work on mint.

..........time for a new one. They are very cheap.

Sometimes, I bought four "on clearance special" at #25 each when a replacement cartridge cost $85, then just threw the first three away instead of buying a replacement cartridge. Consumerism ? Landfill ? Global Warmng ? Thurma wotsername ? Tough, digital life is difficult enough without having to spend a fortune to participate as well.

I assume, as they say, that any printer bought now will work on current WIN. Yes, Microsoft are a pain in the backside.

I plunged in and forked out €55 on a new HP Printer. Can't believe the ease of setup. And no cables! My only moan is the rear-located paper tray. Can't push it back against the wall behind the desk. Otherwise it's fine (but I avoided instant ink).

Carrefour has some exceptional padded laptop bags for sale, at €10.95. The 13" one, the cheapest, holds my HP 14" easily. You can get power supply, a USB cable or twain, and a 🐭 in there too.
