I can think of parts of the UK where 86 years later, that's still the same.

Not all bad, these seem eccentric to us today,
Re: England in the 1930s
I have an interest in the 1930s since reading Twenty Thousand Streets under the Sky by Patrick Hamilton, followed by "Hangover Square". This decade seems to have been squashed in between, and overshadowed by, the roaring Twenties and WWII. Patrick Hamilton has captured this era, himself a victim of circumstance, and recommend if you haven't tried him.

Thanks Mrs Ex, look at the contrast between the two couples in #7, tough times, recommend the books I mentioned earlier. My parents grew up as teenagers in the 30s, on my dads side there was a big family, secure and with good employment, family reminiscences were all about the good times, my Mum spent her teens in the late 1930's bringing up a much younger sister in a Dr Banardo's in London, both their parents had died, not so good memories and people had to be much tougher in those days.
