Rubber tree.
grown in the tropics, produces usable quantities of latex sap between 5 and 15 years of age then is chopped down to make all sorts of things like chopping boards in the kitchen.

Sturt's Desert Pea.
Image

most people in Australia will tell you that the desert pea can't be grown in gardens.
well it can.
but there is a secret to growing it.
Sturt's Desert Pea comes from the arid inland of Australia and it survives in the heat by growing microscopic hair like roots in an extensive area around the plant to gather moisture.
You must not disturb the soil in any way while the pea is growing or the roots all get broken and the plant dies.
I achieved a beautiful display of them in the garden one year but it was hard work keeping all and sundry away from the plants to keep the roots intact.

Asparagus asparagus officinalis.
one of those delicacies one eats between thumb and forefinger.
the Kobe Steakhouse in Bangkok does a wonderful tepinyaki which includes a grilled asparagus. divine!
