What a cheerful and delightful little flower to grow...come summer / christmas I always ensure the backyard is 'festooned' with petunias in pots, hanging baskets, garden beds....just magic!! :))

A summer evening's stroll past a garden where watering has just been completed: the spicy fragrance of petunias is delightful to passers-by.

Wasn't there a song about being a "little petunia in a flowerbed", and a desire to be wished Happy Christmas or some such? :)

Once had 150 petunia plug plants to prick out three hours before I went on hols. Never again! I love the double, trailing Tumbelina variety, Priscilla (purple natch) planted in hanging baskets in the apple trees and in half baskets on the house brick wall. Always have some blue, pink and purple vein singles planted as well.

Alison, this is the only 'petunia' song I know. My brothers thought it hilarious and drove us mad singing along with Tommy Cooper:

Daddy came home from work tired
His boss had been driving him mad.
The kids were all shouting, the dog bit him too
His dinner was nothing but boiled over stew.

I guess it was then he decided
Up to the rooftop he'd go
He was about to jump off when
The kids started howling below

'Don't jump off the roof, Dad
You'll make a hole in the yard
Mother's just planted petunias
The weeding and seeding was hard

If you must end it all, Dad
Won't you please give us a break
Just take a walk down the park, Dad
And there you can jump in the lake.'

Thanks TB. Found the one I was referring to:
I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch, an onion patch an onion patch.

I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch and all I do is cry all day.

Boo hoo. Boo hoo. The air's so strong it takes my breath away

I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch. Won't you come and play with me?

Quite popular in the 1950's.

Have also planted some African Marigolds, that are small in the pots, but ones in the garden beds are almost knee high! And resemble marijuana plants! After 2 months they are only now just starting to show signs of 'budding'.

Another round of petunia seedlings planted this morning...in the bed nearest the pool.... :)

Great when you have unlimited water.
