800 or more Allied POWs died in that raid.
Nowadays it would be a War Crime. The Israelis, who famously do not adhere to the Geneva Conventions, designed and built and maintain nukes designed specifically to drop the Aswan dams.

The morale boost to the British people was probably worth a bit. I suspect Bomber Command lost more than that on a typical raid over Berlin, but the hard part here was that they were all skilled and experienced aircrew.

when I was younger I was definitely in the "Give Them Hell!" camp, but now I just see it all as a sad waste.
