Royal Air Force 100

#1 Post by ian16th » Fri Jan 19, 2018 5:44 pm

As an 'overseas' member of the RAFA I have been invited to put my name forward to attend the RAFA Service at the National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) in Alrewas, Staffordshire, on Sunday 13 May 2018, at 1100 hrs.

Surely the major events are happening on 1st April.

Any UK residents up to speed on these events?

There is an RAF 100 Facebook/web page. Tried to wangle an invite to the ‘in-house’ bash (having attended the 50th and 75th) but no mention of it. Either they’re not having it on account there’s hardly any RAF left or it’s a closely guarded State secret to stop us oldies getting within cooee.

Ian I suspect that the celebrations of the centenary of the RAF have been moved to May due to April 1st being Easter Sunday.

Wouldn't have been a problem if we had stuck with the Orthodox Church; their Easter is a week later! :D

Ex A,

Might be better off going for Sky News, DSTV Channel 402.

I am enjoying it. Just watching Prince Charles. I know he's not everybody's favourite but I think he is superb.

Poor old Mrs May looking a bit glum, weary, and careworn.

Sitting at National Trust cafe at Runnymede, CAVOK, looks like there’s going to be quite a crowd.

I do hope the ex-Ascots are able to watch this wonderful show today, and I'm not using the word show in a demeaning sense, quite the opposite.

The British do pageantry and ceremony (I can't bring myself to use the word 'pomp' because of it's vulgar South African meaning) so well. Very nostalgic and impressive.

I hope someone is recording it (I can't) and if the ex-Ascots would like a copy, I will commit to getting it to them.

Alison would appreciate this too, and I'll make the same offer to her if she's not been able to watch or record it.

In Oz it’s as though it’s not happening. No mention on the news and certainly no special programmes. Facebook was worse than useless; the RAF page apologises for not being able to live stream; the MOD one is also spasmodic; the commercial media live streams time out if you’re not a subscriber and then, to cap it all, the “mock flypast” app put out by the RAF and Lincoln Uni is only obtainable via the UK App Store - and try changing to that with no UK address.

All in all an extremely frustrating experience from someone who was there for the 50th and 75th celebrations and, seemingly, excluded from the 100th :-w

Having been involved in a couple of 'over London' shindigs in my time, I was a touch relieved to see the spacing between sections had been increased, remembering one very exciting one in a lowering cloudbase (77 or 78) when rooftops and TV aerials west of London were inspected......... [-X
