Blackpool Illuminations switched on by Canberra

#1 Post by Woody » Mon Sep 10, 2018 10:08 pm

Was looking for some info on Blackpool Illuminations and came across a list of all the people and animals that have turned on the Lights, does anyone have any idea how and why a Canberra is credited for turning them on in 1969 :)
When all else fails, read the instructions.

Have spent hours researching Australian political history and can find no reference to the Australian Parliament having any involvement with the Blackpool Illuminations at any time. So highly unlikely that they were switched on by Canberra. =))

How touching that the Australians called a town after a British aeroplane.

It did the aeroplane an injustice.

A quick search found the following:
Well, it didn’t actually flick the switch (it had some help from WW2 pilots Douglas Bader and Ginger Lacey, with actor Patrick Wymark), but it did flash some bright lights in synchronisation with the switch being flicked - and that was good enough for Wikipedia and an old Blackpool tourism website we found, so it’s good enough for us!
