Re: Vulcan
Fascinating? How can you infringe the London TMA between Cardiff and Shoreham? One would need to get seriously lost to do that, so it must have been the ex-Navy chap...............

He did. He had contrived to go to White Waltham en route to his assignation for some reason.

Re: Vulcan
Yes, there is a large similarity, although in that farce the leading character was careful enough to ensure that all the air hostesses' names started with same letter. After all, it is the little details that count on the highwire between success and failure in les affaires de coeur even if the protagonists timetables are correctly aligned!Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Mon Dec 20, 2021 7:48 pmAs theatre visits seem in vogue, the above reminds me of Patrick Cargill in Boeing Boeing.

At one point our copilot attended Mess functions with a gorgeous dark haired girl from Nottingham. Unfortunately, while he would always join our crew he always forgot to brief us as to her name.

Re: Vulcan
One can never get enough info on the Vulcan.
Apropos the design of the Vulcan and the role of Roy Chadwick in working on the government request for proposals to meet specification B.35/46, I hadn't realised how early on that process Chadwick was killed in the Tudor crash that also took the life of Avro Chief Test Pilot Bill Thorn, nor did I realise that Stuart Duncan “Cock” Davies, who took over as technical director on the project, ably aided by a coterie of young prodigies, had survived the very same crash. Stuart Davies was an extraordinary man in his own right.
Apparently Avro General Manager, Roy Dobson, was meant to be on the same flight, but missed it due to a phone call.
Stuart Davies, the proof of concept Avro 707 being, primarily, his design.

Re: Vulcan
Reference that "coterie" it seems Bob Lindley was particularly important! Initially Chadwick, who had been separated from his team due to shingles was scathing about Lindley's futuristic idea, but he soon became an ardent believer in the delta.

At Avro, based in Manchester, the company which had built the highly successful Lancaster bomber, a young engineer called Bob Lindley, turned to German swept wing research that he had seen on a trip to Germany just after the end of the war.
At first, Lindley’s design was dismissed: but upon further investigation, the ‘delta wing’ had significant advantages. By enclosing the engines in the wing structure, an aircraft could have reduced drag and high stability without too much weight. Lindley would later go to America to work on the Gemini program and the Space Shuttle. But his sketch became a reality at the all-British Avro, and was named by their technical director Roy Chadwick after the Roman god of fire: ‘Vulcan’. The delta wing design pioneered by the Vulcan would also be used on Concorde and the Space Shuttle.

Re: Vulcan
Bill Thorn was quite a character all told!
Bill Thorn Test Pilot
As a charter pilot in those days he had a number of exciting trips, of which two are outstanding. The first was a Puss Moth charter to Belgium with an eccentric but rich man as his passenger. He gave Bill £180 to spend on himself for the first evening and then, when most people were going to bed, told Thorn that they must start at once for Cairo. When Bill told him you couldn't start just like that, he started a fight in the bar. This was exceedingly foolish because among Thorn's many accomplishments he had won the Wakefield Officers' Middleweight Championship, the Officers' Open Championship, and the Officers'Open Light-Heavyweight Championship. On his passenger's recumbent form the bartender expended most of a siphon of soda water to bring him round.
Later, on the way home, "whilst circling Calais before setting out across the Channel, this passenger (in the back seat) put his arms round Bill's neck and tried to throttle him. The Puss Moth was left to its own devices while Thorn turned round and laid his passenger out a second time.

I have corresponded with her. She was looking for a Calc 7 that must have been on the Valiant, bomber or recce, but never found any trace. She is also on the lookout for the camera watch for the R88.

Interesting, albeit somewhat obsessive, as you say, as is her surname... van Vark, which in Afrikaans (or Dutch) simply means of pig!
