Lt Jack Reynolds has died aged 97. Captured at Arnhem he was photographed after capture giving the German photographer a defiant V sign.

Lt Reynolds and members of the South Staffords Mortar Platoon pass photographer Erich Wenzel, Lance Corporal George Parry following Lt Reynolds thought that they were being marched off to be shot.

A full account of the battle of Arnhem and the story of Lt Reynolds is in "A Street in Arnhem" by Robert Kershaw.

Historian Steve Penticost, who once interviewed Lt Reynolds, said: "Men like Jack Reynolds seemed to have an indomitable spirit.
"It was an iconic image of Arnhem and one that he was very proud of because it summed up exactly what men like him felt, even though it wasn't the conduct you'd expect of an officer.
"When I visited him he had this photo hung up on the wall of his lounge."
