Later you did not see unit badges allowed on uniforms but they were, and probably still are, used on flying suits. Official squadron badges were approved by the College of Arms or whatever it was called but there was usually a private unit badge with the theme varying from the inspirational to the humorous. I remember that the Snoopy and the Red Baron theme was popular when I joined and an artistic airman decorated all of our flying helmets with a logo of Snoopy at the controls.
