Impressive Tiger Moth specs.....

#1 Post by CharlieOneSix » Fri May 08, 2020 11:36 am

The Navy Wings charity sent me another Supporters email today in which they mentioned that some historic FAA aircraft will be flying over Somerset and Dorset today as part of VE 75. One of them will be Tiger Moth T8191.......this particular one has some impressive specs.....12,000 ft/min rate of climb! :)) Who needs Tornados!!

A Tiger Moth would be hard-pushed to descend 12000 feet in a minute.

A JATO equipped Tiger Moth perhaps, but a climb rate like that would tear the wings and fabric off the old girl.

I imagine there are a couple of red faces in the Navy Wings editorial team. To be fair their output is generally excellent!

It wasn't from 12000ft but I was impressed by the rate of descent achieved by a side-slipping Tiger Moth on approach into Duxford. We seemed to be a long way above the M11 and yet landed on the airfield.

I see the Navy Wings site is still proudly proclaiming the rocket like climb rate...

I know I am being a nerd but I am going to contact them and request a correction to the rather more anemic +- 650 feet per minute that probably pertains.

Perhaps if they launch one off a carrier with a catapult and ski ramp it will briefly achieve 12000ft/min, just before it disintegrates.

=))

All this talk of Tiger Moths has made me wish fervently to be able to go out and fly something but in lieu of that this article allows one to live vicariously...

Might not there be a case that after the wings come off, the fuselage might accelerate; albeit in a downwards direction?
